Galito’s first outlet in Malaysia at eCurve (Vs Nando’s Malaysia)

 

For a fast moving city, too few of KL’s fast casual dining restaurants offer real, actual, dining with good ingredients and relaxing ambiance. I am talking about quick service with little waiting time and a balance and delicious meal with good nutrition and the right portion while experiencing all that in a place with joyful and vibrant ambiance. Enter any Nando’s outlet and that’s your glorious casual experience to fuel up and eat well. They’ve always have flamed grilled aromas over diners and while there are not much for vegetarians, there’s yummy meals with no meat in it on their appetisers and sides as well. Notoriously known for their delicious sides, fino sides and big portion appetisers, I say there is always a great share of something for solo or communal dining.

 

And let’s admit it- there are no other flamed grilled chicken like Nando’s. Not until Galito’s from the same country of origin as Nando’s decided to open in Malaysia with their very first outlet located in E- curve Mutiara Damansara. With close to 80% similarities in their menu, concept, and even the interior design, right down to the renowned peri sauces, Galito’s will inevitably being branded as Nandos’ copy cat and even though they are established from as early as 1996, Nando’s got a history approximately 10 years ahead of them when it was founded in 1987. But now that the both are here in Malaysia, would you rather Nando’s or Galito’s?

Here in Galito’s, chicken tasted tender from a long marinating and a quick grill just enough to cook the chicken properly and retaining the juice from within. It was not as flavourful as Nando’s but casual dinners can never tell them apart if not eating both side by side. Chicken serving is offered as quarter (starting from RM 11.50) or half (starting from RM17.90) with smaller variation of sidelines (RM4.90 for regular and Rm 7.50 for large) to choose from.

Smaller sideline varieties are not necessarily bad because quality is assured with lesser to juggle. But here in Galito’s, their sides are at a bigger portion. The sweet potato fries is a must order and one thing Malaysians are going to be thrilled with, is the bottomless white rice that’s fragrant and fluffy and absolutley not a slapdash job. I enjoyed the white rice with the Liver and Roll (RM 9.90) that is and not as peri peri as the ones in Nando’s. I also enjoyed the Galibowl (RM 15.90)- a decent portion of appetizer with opporto rice mixed with chicken cubes, spinach and their signature sishebo sauce. It is good as a main.

They’ve nailed the chili beans as well, but it still doesn’t beat Nando’s Fino Sides which unfortunately tags slightly heavier in price. I’d say Galito’s copied well if not more fantastic than Nando’s and would definitely win the hearts of many Malaysians with the slightly cheaper and more affordable meal choices when it comes to flaming grilled chicken. I like the bigger menu in Nando’s and I’d choose Nando’s sauce over any other sauces anytime.

Wayback Burger at the Melawati Mall

 

Wayback Burger has landed in Malaysia and its first outlet is located at the very convenient mall in Melawati. Apart from the many fnbs that I’ve reviewed for the recent foodieville, there is no way I would let this slide and this one is the exciting one that I was really looking forward to during the restaurant hopping session. Originated from none other than where burger consumption is comforting, this America fast casual restaurant chain based in Cheshire, Connecticut serves burgers and hotdogs, as well as milkshakes.

With an open kitchen parading and showcasing the flow of your burger preparation right from where the meats are grinded and patties are grilled and assembled into stacks and layers of meats and cheese and buns and lettuces. Served with their fresh potato chips, every bite of the burger will be elevated with the texture of those crispy chips.

Meat is very fresh and delicious when I had it, and the buns are what’s different from many burger chains in town. In fact, they are probably the few that does their burger buns in such. Burger bun is grilled with butter and inverted so be ready to have all fingers greasy when eating the Cheeeesy Burger (RM 22.99). This is the signature and with double patties and 4 slices of cheddar cheese, you either love the flavours or you hate it.

Their House Made Chips (RM 12.99) are fantastic because of the thickness of each piece of chips. The crispy and natural flavour of real potato is fabulous. I get to try the Alaska Pollock Fish fillet that’s supposed to go in between buns alongside with tartar sauce and lettuce in their WB Fish (RM 12.99), but I didn’t quite enjoy it. The Chicken Wings (RM8.90 for 4pcs or RM 11.90 for 6pcs) is some extra selection for add on at communal dining. There is smoke bbq sauce, hot sauce, Wayback gold sauce and the chili padi sauce to choose from. I tried the chili padi sauce and I can personally tell you this- it wasn’t spicy at all when in the mouth but the throat burns after.

Baba Nyonya by Sambal- chili @ Melawati Mall

 

No need to scratch your head when it comes to dining in Melawati Mall. The choices are so diverse one is spoilt with the wide selection. Scratch your head deciding what to order instead when it comes to the dishes that represents the heritage of Malaysia. The best of cuisine that is truly unique as a heritage of Malaysia is probably the Baba Nyonya dishes. Baba Nyonya by Sambal- chili offers the wide selection of rich spices and herbs with dishes prepared upon order for their diners to ensure the freshness of each dish.

Combining Chinese wok and claypot into local rempah, Chef Rimong made sure that the rich culinary flavour is delivered in their Peranakan dishes. Homey and comforting, the dishes were packed with flavours we are all familiar with. The dishes are not the only thing that’s capturing the heritage of Malaysia. . The interior and paintings on the wall is equally as heart-warming. Check out their batik prints on their menu. Every piece of menu has a unique piece of batik cloth on it. From the piping hot and savoury spicy claypot of Assam Pedas to the Sambal Petai Prawn and the kangkung Belacan, these dishes were delicious and goes fantastic with some white rice.

And just for the love of fried egg, the Cencalok Omelette is with no doubt on my “repeat order” list. The edges were crisp and textured just nice to balance the soft fluffiness of the egg. Also on the frying mode and the add-on-to-the-mains list is the Chicken Lobak. It could be good for nibbling but above all is Ayam Goreng Berempah that got my attention. Inside the meat was tender and juicy albeit looking a little dry. But hey, don’t let this fool you because it was delicious.

But if you love Peranakan dishes, the Chicken Pong Teh is not too shabby when it comes to generously portioned serving size. Serving hot in a claypot, the pieces of chicken submerging at the rich gravy will be a lovely companion for the white rice. And speaking of claypots, the fish is equally astounding and to be very honest was beyond my expectations. But nothing beats having a completely balanced meal with their vegetable dishes. I love the Kangkung very much- it was young plant and cooked to perfection at the correct timing to not ruin the texture of the green and still having that little bit of crunch in every bite. Plus, it wasn’t greasy despite the load of chili. Thumbs up for this one.

Lastly, don’t forget to treat yourself a little better sometimes for the most perfect meal isn’t complete without the desserts. Serving on the dessert menu is the Banana Fritters and Cendol. Myself is more of a fan or the later instead of the first but if you like breaded deep fried bananas, there is no reason to not order it.

The latest Jamaica Blue Café at the Melawati Mall is one with serenity in a casual relaxing vibe to consistently deliver the unique identity of the brand itself. Named after the Blue Mountain in Jamaica, they take pride in the 2 types of coffee beans – the Jamaica Blue Signature Blend, and the Jamaica Blue Mountain. Both the award winning coffee and the world’s best coffee were delivered perfectly alongside the fabulous food. Perfect to start the day, their Signature Harvest Menu really captured my attention. We all know I love starting the day right with the right food. And this Super Fruit Bowl (RM 19.90) and the Enrichment Bowl (RM 19) is probably also a fabulous choice for fitness enthusiast.

If we are aiming at something slightly more savoury and flavourful, there is the Buttermilk Chicken and Corn Pie (RM 15.90) with tender pieces of chicken and sweet kernels of corn in a smooth creamy sauce, encased in a delicious flaky pastry. This one is served piping hot and is apparently freshly baked in-house. Same goes with the Chicken and Pumpkin Lasagne (RM 24.90) for those seeking comfort in food, this one is served hot and deliciously held together in layers of pasta sheets, chicken, pumpkin, semi dried tomato pesto, ricotta, baby spinach and mozzarella cheese,

For snacking and to replenish that quick sugar rush in between meals, (I know… I have that occasionally) there is the Zucchini and Feta Fritters s (RM 15.90) served with tomato chutney and salad garnish; or their sweet treats namely the Jamaican Queen (RM 15) and the Jamaica Blue Mountain Special (RM 15.90).

Fig is already well known as a wonderful source of calcum and fibre, but this is my first time having them in soup. Together with sea whelk and the high protein pork lean meat, this one goes through the double-boiling process to release the taste of all ingredients and lock in the nutrients in the soup.

I might have taken slightly a longer time to photograph this but the silky smooth and soft texture of the dragon garoupa served steamed with bok choy is still lovely despite it being a little cold (we all know fish dishes normally gets a little fishy when it’s cold). Nonetheless, I acknowledge the benefit of this dish and I appreciate the beneficial ingredients that are also in the dish. Wolfberries are not only known to add and enhance the flavours of the dish, but are also rich in antioxidant and beta carotene to help fight aging and cancer.

Lastly, we had a dessert I would request for a second serving at anytime. Served inside a real coconut, this one with nourishing peach resin in it is supposedly rich in collagen that does not only resemble the bird’s nest when it comes to texture but is also containing almost the same content of the bird’s nest.

Wingstop Malaysia @ The Curve, Mutiara Damansara

 

With over a million followers on Facebook, Wingstop- the popular fried chicken brand is finally here in Malaysia. This fast growing chicken restaurant brand is now open at the Curve, Mutiara damansara and is said to be opening more outlets in different locations in Malaysia over the next 6 years. The thing about fast casual restaurants is that diners are enjoying fast food in an ambience a lot more comfortable with food served to your dining table. With all this reputation, it is inevitable to admit there’s something about it that is alluring and at the same time attractive. And that, we are talking about signature American flavours like the buffalo wings and sticky BBQ wings as well as some of those Louisiana flavours etc, being served and made upon orders. Here, the personal meal is served with your choice of side; and each serving offers two flavours in a plate.

Served together with their signature fries, some options of coleslaw and onion rings accompanied with a dip. There is a limited choice when it comes to sides but these are the signatures to go with their fried chickens.

Drinks range from well-known carbonated drops to milkshakes, as well as a couple of juices. Lucky me as I was craving a lot for strawberry milkshake despite the calories in it. I would really wish to say that it was worth the calorie but unfortunately it wasn’t to my liking and that I should have save the quota for something else. Perhaps some after meal dessert. My Strawberry shake (RM 13.95) was super thick and very it could use slightly a little more of strawberries.

With plenty of other fried chicken chains and Korean fried chicken houses in town, I’m not sure if Wingstop is the exact place to go when craving fried chicken slathered in full on marinades. I mean there are plenty of good ones out there to satisfy that chicken cray. Besides, a lot of those places have portions in enormous sizes, and there is drinking until late night for weekend suppers – it is going to be cray fun night with it. So fried chicken connoisseurs should just save your calorie quota for elsewhere. Watch this featured on the vlog.

Sekai No Yamachan @ Plaza Arkadia, Desa Park City

Originating from Japan and specializes in tebasaki – Nagoya-style fried chicken wings, Sekai No Yamachan at Desa Park City is currently operating a second outlet in Plaza Arkadia. The brand runs with more than 50 outlets worldwide and such reputation has turned their wings into phenomenal stature when it comes to chicken wings.

This is not very distance from where I am based but it’s not the area that I frequent. With a spontaneous decision, we paid a spontaneous visit to Desa Park City and earned some fun as we discover the offerings of this renowned acclaim. Let’s get on with what’s generally offered. From salads to stews and deep fried chicken cubes to tempuras, there is no complexity. Instead, it is all subtle precision on every dish and it’s the kind of variety you’ll want to savour.

Miso Stew Udon (RM 26.90), Salmon Salad (RM 21.90), and Satsumaimo Tempura (RM 11.90) may be the common but it was their package of ambiance and friendly service that really stood out. Plus a good company of friends, the meal was elevated a bit more happiness and satisfaction. Not to mention a little addition of alcohol kick to the meal, Kirin Draftbeer (RM 25.80) weighs up the pleasures of meal indulgence. Miso Stew Udon was deep and full of umami satisfaction.

Proceeding to the popular dish, we quite sampled most of the available flavours but they came to a single conclusion- stale. Grilled Chicken Wings in Salt (RM 14.90 for 5 pieces), Famous Kara-age Deep Fried Chicken Wings (RM 15.90 for 5 pieces) and the Japanese Style Worcestershire Chicken Wings (RM 12.90 for 3 pieces) arrived too quickly on our table – in less than 3 minutes, hence making it very questionable as to whether they are all freshly made to order.

There is a cute and distinctive method to savour the scronny wings but the tough and dry chicken wing is a little stubborn with it that. We prefer eating it our way. Watch it

Chi Mac @Solaris Mont Kiara

 

Chi Mac at Solaris Mont Kiara is that perfect place for the night supper and Korean Fried chicken craving. Their best selling Ganjang chicken (RM 51) is quite a star when it comes to Korean fried chicken. This one is coated in sweet batter that is oozing with intense flavour. With fragrant seasoning and deliciously deep fried to perfection, this one is crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. The sweet tang tickles the taste buds and is delicious even when it’s cold. With their complimentary slaw salad, it could be even more enjoyable if the salad is not over dressed.

For a bit of spicy sweet and sour, with white meat being soft and tender to the bite; Yang Yum Chicken (RM 51) has that delish flavourful batter. It’s contradictory with clean diet but these devilish coats of addictive coating are to die for.

When ordering the Cheese Buldak (RM 55). We were being warned several times by the staff, as if signalling us to stay away from this one. Clearly, he has no idea how much we love our spicy chicken . Korean spicy is distinctively satisfying with the fiery hot finishing and this one is cleverly toned down with the blanket of melted mozarella cheese.

While frying up succulent pieces of tasty chicken bites, Chi Mac is clever to also serve the usual Korean favourite, except they didn’t do a very good job presenting the best of that authentic taste. Our Kim Chi Jiggae (RM 30) was a little diluted and lacking in flavour but the meal is still great accompanied by my favourite Makgeolli (RM 25).

The very first Chir Chir Fusion Chicken Factory has landed in Malaysia with their first outlet already operating in Pavilion Elite KL. South Korea’s largest chain of the renowned “Chimaek” has arrived and serving nothing but freshly made to order chicken dishes, this one sure is one of the best chain Korean Fried Chicken place that I have sampled so far. With all their sauces and marination authentically from Seoul, this consistency leads to benefit Malaysians into being the opportunity to get a taste of the brand’s signature flavours and unique offerings in their funky and casual dining ambiance.

Signature dishes were all crispy and crazy tender with juicy meat bursting with flavours marinated for hours in the house seasoning before that delicious coat of deep fried crispy batter. The fried topokki was a texture sensation when I had the signature Honey Butter Chicken: the tender chicken pieces generously glazed with their very own honey butter sauce and then finished with butter seasoning powder, while the almond flakes went really well with the dried cranberries.

Speaking of topokki, Chir Chir have their own rendition of topokki in cheese! Chewy and soft texture combine with the aromatic melted cheese is probably a fantastic choice if one is a huge fan of cheese.

And whether it is fingers or those special mini tongs brought especially from Korea that you are using, these succulent pieces of chicken is simple yet outstanding at the same time and most importantly, it’s surely the perfect place for communal dining. I’ll go with the fingers.

Here in Chir Chir, these freshly prep and made to order chicken dishes ace not only with their fried dishes because their roasted chicken are equally tasty. There is a clever range of superb tender marination of different flavours, and they are all strangely accompanied with whole salt baked egg and baked potato with sour cream. Not forgetting the salsa to complete the dish but really, their chicken stole all the highlights anyway.

And how about their Nest Snow ? I am a sucker when it comes to cream sauce, not to mention the blanket of parmesan, Cheddar and mozzarella cheese atop some spicy chicken tenders sitting on a bed of sweet potato puree, olives and pepper, and finished with a swirl of whipped cream. That’s right; say good bye to diet and hello to additional 20 laps of swim the next day. A 20 laps I will willingly perform for this one, although the whipped cream is totally unnecessary. I’ll be sure to tell them to skip he cream on mine the next time I dine in. Go with a half and half if you can’t decide if crunchy or glazing coat is your thing. I know I am grateful to be able to taste both at one go.

Portions are large, but an additional order of salad is a good idea – it’s sweet, fresh and light spike of tang from the cheese, making a nice contrast with the chicken. Not to mention the addition of pine nuts-a rare offering in chain operations. I secretly wished they have leaf salad but grapes will do for now. Served with tortilla and complete with honey drizzle and a dose of minced garlic, this Sweet and Fresh Honey Grape Salad is created with bold aspiration.

An extensive beverage selection contains a range of cocktails and beers, so you definitely need not go elsewhere else for the perfect evening out because the pair of beverage with those chicken were heavenly. The Chir Cream beer is inspired by “latte kiss” in a hit Korean drama; oh but more exciting still, the current use of carlsberg in this will soon be replaced by Korean beer. There’s also some striking colours to zest up the dining experience with or without soju because their Tok Tok is too pretty and colourful to not put a smile across your face. Passion Yellow Tok! Tok! is our tropical passion fruit with the infusion fuzzed at the table side just before serving to double the fun factor at the meal and that sure is a good gimmick to draw some attention from the next table.

The choices are plenty with the pieces of chickens in all their dishes being impressively juicy and succulent. That probably will be the biggest draw factor on top of those delicious flavour assortments.

Thai Thong recently launched a new set of menu featuring some of the dishes cooked with a nod to authenticity the classic flavours of traditionally Malay flavour, as well as some innovative creations for the predominantly Chinese crowd. The galore is a mix of traditional and contemporary, and in this June, the new dishes are available with a promotional combo prices.

From 1st of June to the 15th of June, diners can order 3 dishes for RM 108 and this combo features the Braised Australian Lamb with Water Spinach in Casserole, Crispy Sea Prawns with Salted Egg Yolk, and the Dry tossed “Mee Pok” with XO Sauce and Eggplant. It is my first time pairing lamb and water spinach and it was a pleasant dish for anyone who is a fan of lamb. Every cutlet of meat is juicy and well seasoned and the quick dip of water spinach into the hot casserole pot was surprisingly addictive.

Moving to sea harvest and the carbo source, Tai thong never failed to remain solid with their skills and craftsmanship. Salted egg yolk prawns are beautifully presented with an impressive taste that’s deliciously balanced. As for the noodle, this staple is not your usual hawker favourites but with a tasty twist.

Then starting 16th to the 30th June, the combo features Giant Grouper Fillets with Assorted Seafoods in Casserole, Cheese Baked Crab Shell Stuffed with Seafood, and Stir fried Australian Beef Tenderloin served in that lovely Yam ring. Conventional dishes made different and is kicking goals at this dining destination for sure. We are looking at some outstanding Chinese styling and classic Chinese fare. This combo costs RM 118 and in conjunction with the new menu and new dishes promotion, Tai Thong also celebrates Selera Mesra with their ala caret promotion with the Hari Raya festive around the corner.

Staring from 27th may to the 27th of June, we can berbuka puasa with delicious Rendang Curry Chicken (RM 28) so be ready to taste some very authentic flavour of the right amount and mixes of herbs and spices packed into every bite of these curry chicken. As well as from the sea, there is the Sambal Shrimp with Petai served in Pineapple (RM 38), your beautifully presented Tumeric Stuffed Cuttlefish with Mushroom and Capsicum (RM 28), as well as the tantalizing Asam Red Snapper Fillets (RM 38). Never judge the dishes by the ordinary presentation but take my word for it and don’t hold back until you get to their desserts.

Featuring the king of fruits, these luscious pockets of Durian Pancake (RM 15) is certainly happy parcel for durian lover. And for those who do not wish to partake the food fear factor challenge, there is always the Pandan Gula Melaka Ball with Grated Coconut (RM 8). Freshly made with 4 pieces per serving plate, the huge chewy texture with sweet gula Melaka stuffing resembles the ondeh ondeh. I personally prefer ondeh ondeh to this one, but the sweet fresh grated coconut did make up to the lack of gula Melaka burst in this one.

The launch of The Chicken Rice Shop (TCRS)’s new Ayam Rempah Aroma for Ramadhan

The Chicken Rice Shop (TCRS), Malaysia’s leading chain of halal family restaurants, recently unveiled Ayam Rempah Aroma, a dish created especially for the Ramadhan to Syawal period. It is indeniable that the chicken rice one of the favourite for all Malaysians and this dish was developed by none other than Malaysia’s very own celebrity chef and Brand Ambassador for The Chicken Rice Shop, Dato’ Chef Ismail Ahmad.

The launch of Chicken Rice Shop (TCRS)’s new Ayam Rempah Aroma for Ramadhan
Inspired by the traditional Malay delicacies, Dato’ Chef Ismail combined the different flavours of a traditional Malay rendang with an assorted mix of herbs and spices to making this a wholesome yet truly harmonious dish.
In creating the dish, Dato’ Chef Ismail made sure that the freshest chicken is first grilled to perfection before aromatic herbs and spices like green chilli, lemongrass, shallot, fennel and cumin are used to complete the dish. Dried chilli is then sprinkled on the dish for that extra “kick”.
YM Tunku Dato’ Mu’tamir Bin Tunku Tan Sri Mohamed, Chairman of TCRS Restaurants Sdn Bhd (TCRS) said, “The Chicken Rice Shop has always been known as a place where all Malaysians can come together to enjoy a delicious, authentic and wholesome Malaysian meal.”
“In creating Ayam Rempah Aroma with Dato’ Chef Ismail, our aim was to create a special dish that takes its cue from age-old Malay cooking traditions so that all Malaysians can come together and enjoy it while appreciating the rich tapestry and culture we embrace here in our country.”
