Bar Patua @ MGM Cotai, Macao (Macau)

#sycookiestravelogue, #foodeverywhere #2018macaoyearofgastronomy #experiencemacao #sycookiesxmacao

Macao does casinos and entertainment like no other city. The glam and bling of luminescence and iridescent glow at every single corner reflects the class and hospitality Macao has come to represent. At MGM, the lustrous warren of comfy nooks for wooing, with an elegant even though not as imposing bar to sit at if you like some bartender chat with your drinks- there’s history and storytelling for the tasting notes on what’s offered behind the bar, which might not arouse much interest in wine or beer drinker, but is quite handy for whisky or gin lover.

Serving their signature Portuguese inspired cocktail tonight, the folks behind the bar are all practiced professionals; personable, knowledgeable and looking sharp and handsome in nicely pressed suits. Our mixologist told us quite an interesting story from how Patua Penicillin (MOP 95) came about and how dark rum, scotch, and infusion of lemon, ginger, fresh herbs like rosemary, thyme and dill works their magic as it sits longer before pouring into your drinking glasses. Also serving us a couple of other well- executed drinks like the Bunny Mary (MOP 95), the energy is high in this handsome room filled with sets of modern European.

consisting of dark rum, scotch, lemon, ginger, honey syrup, fresh herbs
For those in need of some food, the tapas do the trick. Key to good tapas in my opinion, is all in the combination of skillful cooking and the most convivial of atmospheres if not the sourcing of the finest ingredients; in which Bar Patua absolutely fulfills. They might not strike sourcing of perfect ingredients and very little attention to details when it comes to presentation but combined with the pairing of ethanol compound, it is all good to most people.

Burgers and Lobsters @ Sky Avenue Genting Highland – Still a hype in 2019?

Since their opening in the Sky Avenue Genting Highlands, Burger & Lobster has long been considered a gastronomic must for visitors so it was no surprise that it prompted massive queues consisting of both locals and tourists. Some would even make a day trip just to indulge in a meal of burger and lobster at in the chilly temperature of Genting Resorts. As straight forward as its name, the restaurant sells two items only. Menu is so simple it is either lobster in several cooking method or Burger for those loving thick beef patties in between buns. Gaining so much love from fans all over the world, this eatery’s global expansion has been nothing but a great success, especially when they feature a unique local flavour at each one of their outlets in different countries respectively. My first visit was when I tagged along for one of their bloggers engagement session but I wasn’t too impressed to be honest. Second visit was a casual hang out at Genting and it was equally unimpressive. The following visits were amusingly inconsistent with several dining session rather enjoyable while the rest of the time being rather disappointing.

Burger and Lobster Malaysia

Lobster served in intense thick chili that’s also in my opinion, uncharacteristically diminutive sweet, wasn’t really a thing for me especially when all it does was overshadowing any flavour from the lobster. Hence, it was a onetime experience only for me. Every other time was every other thing and this time, I had the best lobster roll out of the many other times of my visit here in Burger and Lobsters Malaysia. This time, I could taste amazing texture so juicy and bouncy, it was delectable.

Fritz Brasserie @ Wolo Hotel, Bukit Bintang

With a chic interior and the top- notch service, Fritz Brasserie sits elegantly at the ground lobby of Wolo Hotel in Bukit Bintang. Polished in every way possible, the Fritz Brasserie ‘s remarkable interior absolutely got me enamoured of owner Christian Bauer and Eddie Chew’s sense of style and concept. The same name behind the renowned and iconic names such as Mr. Chew’s Chino Latino and Troika – sky Dining, it’s gusty modern Euro- inspired offering pleases, and excites in an equal measure, right from the small plates to crackling artisan bread with luscious quality butter, and fries discovered better by mistakes to meticulous curating of desserts. Whether you’re a food novice or seasoned gourmand, there’s going to be something you’ll enjoy here at the Brasserie Fritz.

Steak (RM 95) here is showcasing the tender meat at its best: the cut blushing pink with juiciness at the prick of a fork. Fish and Chips (RM 75) is all about the crispy batter of Indian inspired flavours. The aromatic batter layering the plump juicy fillet carries Indian spices that could either be a work of a genius, or the opposite- depending on how much you can accept fish fillet with a hint of spice masking that sweet, juicy cod. It is inevitably impressive how well this tender-firm textured large flakes with high moisture is so well encased in that light airy batter casing. Serving generously with that signature fries, and those addictive dollop of raita, along some nicely cooked peas, this one is a memorable one. Mussels (RM 38) was radically different from anything we’ve ever tasted. This fresh black mussels in tarragon broth served with potatoes and choucroute is so tasty the flavour lingered in the mouth long enough for a smile. This if nothing else was worth another visit. Only, I’d wished for it to serve with some baguette perhaps.

Small plates are nearly stellar. Each dish, such as Soured Cucumber (RM 18)- Japanese cucumber and liquorice scented hummus with dill and Marinated Mushrooms (RM 38)-Mushrooms with lemon feta cheese, crushed peas and my favourite mint, is beautiful and thoughtfully rendered, packed with bold flavours. Also, on the table is another all-time favourite of mine- Roasted Cauliflower (RM 18). Herring Escabeche (RM 38) served with crème fraiche, onion, gherkin, celery, chives and chervil maybe pricey given the portion size, but it isn’t measurable with portion to begin with. Special mention should also go to the incredible bread and butter.

Desserts stayed loyal to the classics like Ice cream scoops (RM 16) and Crème caramel (RM 25). Ice creams are homemade from fresh milk, cream, and eggs and served with chantility cream and topping. Fritz Crème Caramel stacks cake and creamy caramel with marinated fresh berries- a combination to balance the luscious creamy and tangy sweet berry.

Brasserie Fritz has gained a fast reputation for great service and even better food and ambiance, with some saying that the chips served here might very well be one of the best in town. I wouldn’t agree one hundred percent but it seemed to magically have me wanting to have every occasion celebrated at this establishment.

The restaurant menu is slowly being fine-tuned so prices might vary from when I visited.

Plane in the City Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur– Boeing 737 aircraft restaurant

Throughout the years, I’ve noticed a growing trend of new dining entertainments with dinner menu to be enjoyed alongside theme and entertainment. Whether it is themed speakeasy bars or those hidden cocktail bistros, it gets more and more overwhelming each time. This year, brought to us by the same names behind the iconic Dinner In The Sky- Two Spicy Entertainment, it’s dining inside a real aircraft in the middle of the city. It has been fascinating to see how receptive Malaysian diners are towards entertaining dining, and more so on how the unabating interests prolonged while each trend lasted.

#pitc

Landed a couple of months ago and launched in April, this Boeing 737 aircraft now permanently transformed into a unique dining space with a three-course meal created by the Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur. With two sessions per day with each lasting 90 minutes to fit all three courses, a wing walk experience, and a cockpit tour and photo opportunity, it would be a struggle conclude if this experience is worthy of the prices paid. Like actual airline, dining menu are categorized into classes . The first class experience costing RM 999 will include a stay at the hotel Le Meridien whilst Business and Economy Class will cost RM 399 and RM 199 respectively.

It is certainly one of the most exciting restaurants in the city, but not quite entirely known as an epicenter of most fabulous dining experience depending on what exactly is to be anticipated. If you’re looking for an easy and reliably good dinner along some relaxing affair, spend the money elsewhere. But if seeking a bit of adrenaline rush and excitement from having to juggle through all three courses and both cockpit visit and Wing walk, as well as the mandatory checking in on social media postings; Plane in The City here wouldn’t be a mistake. You don’t even need to enlist their cabin crew for the service- extensive assistance are provided with confirmed joy and fun factor.

There is option to book an entire session privately but take note this standard seating accommodates up to 20 pax at one go.

Pim’s & the Rama at Aman Suria Damansara

Pim’s &the Rama at Aman Suria Damansara

Talk about a pure satisfaction of tomyam and thai fare: Pim’s &the Rama at Aman Suria must be the one that comes into mind when it comes to mixes tongue-basting Thai soup in a Korean hot pot lookalike serving. Unlike conventional Thai restaurants, their first operating outlet in Klang was already renewed in such that the interior of the place catching on to trendy designs. This second outlet has wowed neighbourhood patrons with both it’s ingenuity, authenticity (think Thai staple with Chang Beers) and a good value of money. Oh did I mentioned the live acoustic music on Fridays and Saturdays?

As is the case in many of Klang Valley’s most authentic Thai restaurants, the cooking here is largely from the region of northern Thailand – including salad, accompanied by anything of pork. The food menu features plenty of well-known Thai dishes, with Green Curry Chicken (RM 28) alongside Thai Papaya Salad (RM 18), Pad Thai Noodles Prawn (RM 16.50) and juicy Pork dishes- Thai Grilled Pork Neck (RM 19), BBQ Pork Sticks – 3pcs (RM 12), Spicy Hot-Basil Leaf Minced Pork Rice with Fried Egg (RM 14.90) and Thai Pork Leg on Rice (RM 15.90).

You’ll also find a collection of southern Thai dishes such Thai Otah Otah Seafood (RM 25.50). Fish dishes are available as well. Fresh Siakiap Seamed with Chili & Lime Soup (RM 66) and Fresh Boneless Deepfried Siakiap Fish with Thai Sweet & Sour Sauce (RM 68). All very lovely to go with white rice.

The menu carries a long list of Thai dishes but something else is brimming with innovative confidence. Unashamedly fusing hotpot and Thai with the likes of fresh seafood and thick tomyam soup and lining the surface of the pot with crayfish, prawns, scallops, squids, mussels and some mushroom; and then topped with boiled egg with that runny and custardy yolk, Pim’s Super Seafood Tom Yum Pot (RM 88) reminds me of the Korean army hot pot. And, this one is sensational with icy cold beer.

If not this huge seafood tomyum pot? Then go for the popular pink soup. Yen Ta Fo (RM 39) represent hot pot with fishballs and tofu pieces and is another dish perfect for anyone who loves hot pot.

Babe x Cuca

Chef Kevin Cherkas of the famed Cuca Restaurant in Bali and Chef Jeff Ramsey of Babe Kuala Lumpur came together as one for the most interesting culinary experience this month. Think Japanese meets Spanish over 20 canapes and 4 wines to pair, with one of the best views in KL and some groovy music to sway along. It was an experience filled with bites of creativity and food science with extravagant ingredients beautifully paired to bedazzle the guests.

Sitting on the 11th floor of Clearwater in Damansaraa Heights, Babe is all about fun dining and along with the stunning killer view of the city skyline. Chef Jeff Ramsey, is the first and only American to earn a Michelin star during his tenure at the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo. And recently earning top 10 restaurant in Asia, the modern fusion cuisine at Cuca Bali has long known for their passion and clever cooking techniques. Created by Michelin-trained Chef Kevin Cherkas and launched in Jimbaran, Bali 2013, Cuca serves-up flavourful bites that pairs fantastic with everything else during the occasion. It’s a first-class flare to an incredible gourmet collaboration.

Crab Factory @ Johor

Another exciting crab experience at the Johor food trip not long ago had me questioning how so that I have never once visited their Klang Valley outlet in PJ. Crab Factory brings Johor a unique seafood menu and interactive dining experience at this beautiful enclave much alike mini Paris (or a mini European township). Located not too far from Mount Austin, the second day with the bunch of makan kaki started with huge and fresh seafood as opposed to dainty bite sizes of sashimi from the first day. If you asked me, I think all our cholesterol probably raised by 20% during that 2 days. The amount of seafood (and everything else in between) can easily feed me for a week. Generous sizes and amount aside, it was by far the best seafood I have had in the past 6 months at least, if not the juiciest. How so I haven’t been eating at the PJ outlet? They were so good!

1.Crab Factory @ Johor
Crab Factory Johor

Unsurprisingly, the focus in crab factory is the seafood and the eatery promise nothing but the finest and freshest dishes. With no plating skills required, everything is eaten right from the table. And the sweet crustaceans are absolutely something I will gladly snap on a bib and dive right in at any time. Also feel free to mess the entire table so long as you don’t eat from the wrong pile.

Served in a plastic bag and dripping with a house sauce made from garlic butter, and together with vegetables, these meals are presented in packages as such: Crab Lover Shiok (2-3 pax), Crab Lover Party (4-5 pax), and Crab Lover Giler (7-9 pax) priced at RM 49.90 or RM 59.90 per pax. I thought it was a fantastic deal for seafood lover. I would eat this again anytime and work on the calories later.

If fresh crabs, prawns, lobsters, crawfishes, or even mussels with every crevice coated with delicious sauce isn’t a reason to get messy then I don’t know what is. This one is indeed a lovely and ideal place to feast for every occasion and any celebration, so long as it is not a proposal. Don’t believe me? La Cave Wine Bar @ Telawi Bangsar

La Cave @ Bangsar

With a fourth generation wine maker Florian Paul Raymond as one of the partner, wine enthusiastic have a new option to sample more wines choices especially uncommon and unconventional labels from both the New and Old World wines. Donnie Eugene Maclary is the other brain of La Cave and it’s for the same passions especially for good wine and socialising, that the two made such good team to bring some unique drinking experience for consumers in the trendy Telawi enclave in Bangsar.

1.La Cave
2.La Cave

The “cellar” albeit tiny and narrow was very polished and cleverly designed with tiers of wine racks to showcase some over 200 odd labels starting from RM 75 per bottle on one side and the other, with a large mirror wall to produce space illusion. In the bar is strictly non-smoking but there’s a facade of alfresco seats. The passion for the business is clearly translated into their interior and everything is kept comfortable with warm lighting and bare tables and stools. It’s a mixed concept of modern and traditional. They offer this gorgeous space for events and functions with no extra charge but of course with a little profit from the wine. Food to pair with wines are available. At the moment, they serve pizza, cold cuts, cheeses, breads, and pate.

Considering the abundance choice of rare and unfamiliar wine selections, owners are more than happy to talk wine and spirit with you. And while there’s a wide range of French wines, Florian, of course, recommends his family’s artisanal Fiesta label from Madiran, France. As a wine importer, expect reasonably priced bottles. To keep things even more interesting, there is certified halal alcohols! Check out this one with real 24K gold in it.

Birusan @ APW (BAngsar)

This petite yet seductive corner fitted with the bar occupying almost 70 percent of the room is recently lively again and named Biru San now. This Japanese bar serves mostly Japanese alcohol and some small selection of classic cocktail choices. And with very limited space, you can slide up over to the bar or simply just be seated at the casual alfresco where you’ll be greeted by the most friendly and chatty service crew. Immaculately suited very properly and carefully suggesting our choice of drinks, it didn’t took us long to decide on what we want.

K-Pub (YG Republique) @ Trec KL

K Pub -YG Republique @ Trec KL

Korea’s biggest entertainment brand is happening here in Malaysia at one of the most happening location in Kuala Lumpur- Trec KL. Together with Samgeori Butcher’s BBQ grill restaurant and the upcoming K Ramen, there is also the K-Pub within a single restaurant complex. Fan of YG Republique can now spend some hip and cool dine and wine moments all under one roof whilst accompanied by some of the latest and trendiest K- tunes.

K Pub (YG Republique Trec KL)

We’ve tasted the amazing premium meats at the Samgeori Butcher at the grand opening and now, we toast and drink our way through some colourful mix of alcohol and paired it with some comforting and delicious Korean snacks cum mains. That we are talking about the carbo loaded Korean Pancake (RM 25), the delicious Seasnail Salad with cold noodle (RM 70), the renowned K-Fried Chicken (RM 50) and the homemade sauce coated Red Chicken (RM 50). I’m personally not a fan of their pancake rendition maybe because I made mine with lesser oil? But the Sea snail salad totally nailed it, I was slurping my way through the noodle and chewing the snails away nonstop. Chicken aren’t the best of this top Korean native favourite snack but hey, it worked with the Malaysian palate – still juicy on the inside with generous crispy batter wrapping the bite sized chicken pieces.

And what’s the best on top of that? Soju bomb of course! But if snacking and drinking over a long night, please go easy with the booze cause they have a serious line up of fun mixes. Staff operates like clockwork and cocktails are taken so seriously with the flips, tapping, or the raise of a little pinky while grabbing on the shaker; and all that with the focused eye and a smile on the face. It’s nice to see the bartenders keeping things pro and fun at the same time and if you are lucky, he might even do a little magic trick to spice up the night. Such charisma was quite the perfect way to kick off proceedings especially when munching off with those Assorted Dried snacks (RM 60). Featuring the YG signature Cocktails at RM 30 each, the instant colour boost on the bar was a lovely sight. These colours are strong boozes – there’s Magarita, Singapore Sling, Korean Sojito, Pina Colada, and Martini.

Hands and Heart @ Bangkok, Thailand

Beyond their instagrammble white lay out, this coffee spot delivers for those serious about their brew. An understated coffee bar with minimal seating, it’s probably not the best place to linger but serious coffee drinkers will find this an essential destination for the passion of coffee brewing is hard core at this cafe. While coffee bean from various origins are part and parcel of this impressive coffee bar, there is one particular item on the menu that caught my heart, soul and everything or anything you can probably think off to have me returning again.

Myself could come up with reasons more than you can shake a stick at to revisit for their Kombucha Coffee. Being a huge fan of Kombucha mainly because of that unique and pleasant taste on top of the beneficial factors, the coffee Kombucha here is probably the best I have ever had so far. And to make it worst now that I am back home, I’ve not found any place in Malaysia with coffee Kombucha half as close to this one that I’ve had here in Hands and Heart Bangkok. Oh well…looks like I am visiting Bangkok again real soon.

Wine Pairing at Cincin (Cheras)

A lot of the time when we’re eating out, we simply buy a bottle probably just because we like the sound of it and clandestinely hope that it will cope with everything we throw at it. But let’s just face it, we can’t always order a different bottle to go with every single dish at the course. However, the recent wine pairing menu had impressively put 2 bottles and sailed through quite a tricky series of dishes including the starter Caesar Salad, the Clear Soup with Truffle Oil, Grill Portobello with Bacon and Cheese and the Poach Salmon with White Wine Broth.

These were the first few dishes paired with Viognier and Arinto variety here at the Cincin pairing and Christmas menu. I personally feel that Caesar dressing is notoriously difficult to match with wine, let alone the type of green that is in the salad itself but tangy generally isn’t a wine killer. Except here they totally killed the experience, overdressing and drenching the greens in the creamy dressing.

This pale colour wine that’s rounded with balanced acidity following a mellow aroma of dew highlights characteristics of the accompanying tasting notes so to begin with, Viognier and Arinto closely resembles one another when it comes to the floral qualities. Hence if you like most Portugal wines and you like your wine brut to go with your meal, this one is very easy to drink and pairs super lovely with soft seafood.

The second bottle to pair with the Grilled Lamb Rack with Red Wine Rosemary Sauce and I am definitely happy with the choice of pairing. Lamb is a constant on menus in almost every wine pairing but it is usually challenging to pair with blends but tonight, each bite of lamb with Aldeya Tinto did a great job with that perfect balance and easy drinking of that complete round up of acidity and juicy aftertaste.

The night ended with some lovely dessert, with my heart absolutely melting all over the Ballerina and the Hojicha Crème Brulee. Both the dessert making that grand finale so superb, everyone seemed to polish their bowls and plates clean.
