Kara – Conceptual French Cuisine, Kota Damansara (Sunway Giza Mall)

This contemporary French joint is all set with autumn-hued dining room and that neat and immaculate table arrangements. Lighting that creates a warm and intimate vibe that will heat up the heart before the stomach warms up for the main course, with a free flow of salad and appetizers at the salad bar. Indulge in Kara’s lunch offerings, including starter soda, one main of the day, and a spread of free flow salad and appetizers.

Beautifully served in champagne flutes, the Elderberry and Elderflower mix of soda cordials.

This salad bar is most lauded with bruschetta and slaws, and most delicious selection of cheese and olive. The hype surrounding its launch wasn’t prominent, but this polished tribute to the ultimate French contemporary is still charged with dynamite je ne sais quoi from affordable lunch serving through to romantic dinner. There is an entire service team making sure this contemporary restaurant living up to its reputation in both exceptional customer attention and culinary innovation. We are talking about set lunch buffet of RM 25+ and that is an absolute steal when it comes to value for money French cuisine.

Kara has tinkered little with the nostalgic transatlantic dishes, and we enjoyed the salad bar. But the pasta main course that followed was over-cooked: though well executed and teamed with a light pasta sauce, and cubes of salmon chunks seemed a match. Much better was the beef and chicken ratatouille, served in the portion perfect for lunch. Gravy for beef might be a little heavy but to have that with the bread is amazing. The tender beef helps balance it all but it needs more herbs. Some tweaks could be good but the portions are generous and price tags are small, it is worth every cent for quality like this, in particularly in relation to the ace ingredients and supremely innovative flavours.

Guess What Vietnamese restaurant @ Kota Damansara

Vietnamese chain and standalone restaurants are getting more and more popular in our local food scene with the latest and my most recent favourite, Guess What? at the Kota Damansara. No need to actually guess it, cause that’s the name of this Vietnamese restaurant. Don’t ask me. But there’s all the classic Vietnamese dishes (summer rolls, pho, rice) plus some Vietnamese tea and coffee. The menu is an edited-down list, each dish portrayed in an adjoining colour pic: a couple of starters, lots of substantial bowlfuls, some side dishes and my favourite sandwich of all time- banh mi. Service is laid-back yet welcoming, and the food quite superb. Not only is the food impressive and authentic, it’s inexpensive too. Whether you’re after Bánh mì or a steaming bowl of Pho, Guess What Vietnamese boast more than enough signature dishes to satisfy your cravings.

The herby Summer Rolls (RM 6.90) were a joy, together with the Fish Sauce Chicken Wing (RM 6.90) that is very highly recommended by the owner, for a good reason. Let the first bite speak for itself and at that point it’s only the eyes that’s talking cause the lips are sealed munching on that delicious bites of succulent chicken. Mango Papaya Pork Salad (RM 6.90) doesn’t quite capture the usually obsessed-with-raw papaya-me like how it usually does, but is a decent enough rendition with the addition of pork in it. I’ll go for the Deep-Fried Rolls (RM 6.90) instead.

Dry noodles were joy, and the beautifully flavoured pho with slices of beef, chicken and seafood was all it should be. All three of the Pork Chop Noodles (RM 9.90), Stir Fried Australian Beef (RM 12.90) , and the Lemongrass Chicken Vermicelli (RM 11.90) were packed with generous meat and a whole chop of pork, with tasty and fresh garnishes to enhance the flavours of each bite, every bowlful is a value for money. Pho with options of either rice noodle or egg noodle comes in beef and chicken variants, plus that seafood option packed with delicious homemade meat balls with satisfying biting size with deep and flavourful broth. Silky noodle some with a rendition of additional poached free-range egg is a luxury although it would be fine without it. Choose among Clams (RM 8.90), Handmade Beed Ball (RM 13.90), Pork (RM 8.90), Fish (RM 12.90), Beef Internal Organs (RM 12.90), Chicken (RM 8.90) using free range chicken and 1 poached egg, or even the Australian Beef Pho (RM 13.90 if asking for beef slice or RM 17.90 if asking for Ribeye Slices) for a meal of hearty comfort and satisfying pleasure.

The noodle bowls are not the only thing bulked out by massive, meaty toppings. Rice dishes definitely delivered with the same value for money with options like Beef stew rice (RM 15.50), Vietnamese Chicken or Pork Chop (RM 12.90), and Lemongrass Pork or Chicken (RM 9.90). The meats excel when it comes to depth of flavours and while there isn’t really any disappointment here, given the comfortable setting and fair pricing offered, I’ll let the absence of alcohol drinks slide.

French- Vietnamese sandwich is a big part of Vietnam’s street food culture but they are ubiquitous in Vietnamese café and restaurants outside Vietnam. I for one is a lame sucker for the crisp-shelled baguettes that makes beautiful crackling sounds. Even if they aren’t the principle offering, I am always ordering it just to have a bite of the crispy baguette. The baguettes here are outsourced and are filled with a choice of Beef, Pork, Chicken, or Tuna (all priced at RM 7.90 each), and topped with fresh vegetables and herbs. I love the generous coriander on it. The classic pork banh mi comes with a succulent cold cut of pork, earthy liver pâté, crunchy veg and fresh coriander, all in a light crispy baguette. It can be happiness in every single bite depending on how much you love banh mi but no matter how much I love it, I probably wouldn’t go for tuna.

Fifth Palate @ Kota Damansara celebrates Malaysia Day with Nasi Lemak

Fifth Palate @ Kota Damansara

If there is one dish that represents Malaysia and if that particular dish must fit into any meal of the day (all breakfast, lunch and dinner); then it would inevitably be the nasi lemak for sure. And with the celebration of Merdeka and Malaysia day in August and September respectively, we are celebrating it with an assortment of nasi lemak renditions. We have the nasi lemak kukus, nasi lemak bungkus, and even nasi lemak with pork rendang. Fifth palate at Kota Damansara is celebrating patriotism with the national dish itself with the addition of Pork rendang on top of the usual suspects.

1.Fifth Palate @ Kota Damansara
2.Fifth Palate @ Kota Damansara

Their intereperation of this emblematic national dish is well executed here at the Fifth Palate. Not only did the sambal perfectly complementing the pandan infused rice, their pork rendang itself was absolutely delicious with aroma and thick flavours to accentuate the umaminess of the tender pieces of pork.

3.Fifth Palate @ Kota Damansara

Together with this dish is the Teh Tarik with Gula Melaka. This combination was cleverly done albeit a little weird but to go with their nasi lemak, is pleasantly acceptable.

4.Fifth Palate @ Kota Damansara

Finishing with their pandan flavoured eggette folded and filled with tasty coconut ice cream, is probably the best dessert to complete such satisfying meal. Sprinkled with some juicy corn kernels, this dessert can be a meal on its own if you are not sharing but hey, best things are shared and what’s a better to celebrate Malaysia if not over some sweet treats with your best bud?

Korean delight @ Gangnam 88, Kota Damansara

Gangnam 88’s long-standing reputation has not faltered – its BBQ offering maintains good standards and variety, and their staffs being friendly and helpful. It is set to revolutionise Korean dining with their fancy dishes for sure.

Here at the Kota Damansara outlet (I know, why not the Solaris Mont Kiara outlet when it’s within walking distance right?), a couple of us bloggers decided to fill our stomach whilst catching up with one another and this is one of the best with a good option so everyone can have something they like. At the same time, Gangnam 88 is decked out with neat furniture and sophisticated seating, ample to provide a comfortable dining experience.

7.Gangnam 88 @ Sunway Giza

The meats offered, are of top notch freshness thanks to the healthy flow of orders so one can easily order anything from all the classic choices including marinated meats of variety parts, and then consume at ease in their satisfying recipes. But we are feeling squid instead of meat so we had Squid Jjambbong and Kimchi Soup. With a Jeyuk bbokeum and complimentary side dishes, the entire set cost RM 118 with complimentary steam egg, and it’s called the Friends Set. Such a cute name to celebrate friendship ^^.

I had the Breakfast Milkshake Deluxe comprising of strawberry, museli and manuka honey and this one is a promising rush of sugar decadent.

Hameediyah Nasi Kandar @ Sunway Nexis, Kota Damansara

Think Nasi Kandar and it probably has already staked a name for itself in Penang as one of the signature Malaysia-Indian cuisine. Packaged in a fast-food-style dining, Hammediyah Nasi Kandar in Kota Damansara is now serving hot and fiery in Sunway Nexis, the notorious hotbed of eateries.

1.Hameediyah Nasi Kandar @ Sunway Nexis, Kota Damansara

When navigating through this heavily saturated enclave, Hammediyah Nasi Kandar stands out in bright yellow and pleasant green, with tidy seats and tall ceiling with warm lighting and a delicious wafting scent of spices. We often see nasi kandar stalls with mamak, traditionally wearing a sarung on the waist and friendly smile beneath that moustache. Here, it is represented on the walls to making it family friendly to dine in. Eat outdoor when it is breezy, or dine on mezzanine level for a bit more privacy.

2.Hameediyah Nasi Kandar @ Sunway Nexis, Kota Damansara

If the fancy décor gives you any doubt on the authenticity of the dishes, fret not. Instead, be rest assured that the simmering meats and golden rice grains is one hundred percent Malaysian comfort food at its best. Fresh serving from the high turnover (from the perpetual line of diners) is amazing, and what’s more impressive is the hint of rich spices in those generous chunks of meats meshed every plate of our meal.

Add on more dishes when sharing- I like my sotong and papadum. It’s incredible this generously- portioned dish with a drink causes about RM 15 with meats, vegetables, eggs, etc. Don’t forget to complete the meal with soothing sweet and delightful teh tarik before leaving happy.

Two Pesos Malaysia @ Kota Damansara

Two Pesos @ Kota Damansara (Second Outlet)

Steamboat is a communal affair, and groups of diners usually enjoy steamboat in huge group but what happens when there is very few of you but would still like to enjoy cooking bits of variation in bowls of assorted bubbling stocks? The popular choice and answer to that would be Two Pesos, the modern Taiwanese mini steamboat that is already popular amongst steamboat lovers.

Offering a range of fresh ingredients and a lovely array of soups in individual pot serving size, the selection of mini pots were improvised and amended so the new menu is currently a lot more interesting with a couple of new additions along with few from old menu that has proven to be a keeper. Like the first outlet, this one uses recyclable menu where diners mark and pick the choices of combinations offered in respective combo sets. All the mini pot would come with a choice of either fish or poultry and carb source of either rice or noodle.

Two Pesos Steamboat Menu

This new and improved version of the second Two Pesos is essentially furnished, with higher ceiling for better ventilation, plain wooden tables each with stove inset. And following the success from the first outlet, the flavours of their soup are very global. From Japanese Sukiyaki to Mongolian hot pot, big parties can feast and sample from more than 10 kinds of soups. As well, over at the condiment station, their popular perfect-match-sauce that offers a diverse eating experience although I’d say those sweet broths is so flavourful you don’t need the array of sauces.

2.two pesos kota damansara
3. two pesos steamboat kota damansara

The goodness of fresh ingredients with sliced fish, vegetables and other goodies fortunately don’t come at VIP prices. The Japanese Sukiyaki Pot (RM 15.50) that is jam packed with flavours serves sweet and delicious soup that grows richer as the ingredients cooked. Plenty of mushrooms, sweet pea sprouts, radish, corn, pumpkin and all this matches well into the sweet sukiyaki pot.

4.Two pesos mini hotpot steamboat kota damansara
5.Two pesos mini hotpot steamboat kota damansara

Being a fantastic place for families to visit, I would recommend the all time favourite that’ll probably be right on top of the popularity chart; Milky Seafood Pot (RM 16). Faultlessly matching with sweetness of the seafood, with an actual slice of cheese inside the pot, this soft milky broth is bundled with umami sensation that pleases the taste bud. It is a top scorer amongst younger dinners. Merryn’s boys seemed to like this one and it was plenty of joy watching them enjoying their food.

6. Two Pesos Kota Damansara
7. Kota Damansara Two pesos

Sour Greenings Pot (RM 15) is least fancier when it comes to the broth but this one serves awesomeness because after a quick stir frying to extract the flavour from your meat, the clear broth is so ready for the vegetables, noodles and other cook-it-yourself goodies to plunge into the boiling broth.

11. Two Pesos SS 2 new outlet in Kota Damansara

And with the sour vegetables cooking in the pot, there is no need for dipping sauces.

Also well known to have serving their mini pots in respective pot functionality, Two Pesos is probably the only place to see different serving pots on each tables. We’ve seen the Tahini pots in their first outlet, this time we look at their Italian Tomato Pot (RM 16) and Lemon Seafood (RM 16) otherwise also known as the Hello Kitty pot. Expect this one to clog the social media of Hello Kitty fans. Alas, as impressive as the pots are, the taste weren’t as intense and any of the earlier pots. A milder approach to savour the flavour of the ingredients, both carries a light umami with slightly tangy finishing.

14.Two pesos mini hotpot steamboat kota damansara
15.Two pesos mini hotpot steamboat kota damansara

But the ultimate enjoyment this time around at this second outlet is Two Pesos BBQ Pot (RM 19.50)- a two in one set with both the hot pot and a BBQ grill for twice the fun and twice the satisfaction. The set is good for one but sharing is always a little more delicious and heartwarming.

16. two pesos kota damansara

The meat in this set features more meat than regular sets and this makes a difference to meat lovers.

17.two pesos kota damansara

This newer outlet is more spacious and equally good when it comes to the quality of their soups and every other ingredient that goes into the pots or on the grill pan. Most importantly, there is a higher chance to skip the long queue before news travel.

Rak Somtam @ Kota Damansara

Neat, contemporary décor, with dark wood and sufficient lampshades, gives Rak Somtam at Kota Damansara a polished and expensive image, buy the menu is surprisingly wallet- friendly. With the amount of portion you get, alongside with few top notch ingredients, the 2 page menu showcases some good value, including classic Thai dishes custom to blend into local palate so don’t expect super authentic Thai fieriness nut do sample some definitive dishes like Tom Yam and glass Noddle salad – all stylishly presented.

2015-10-15 09.14.06 1

Rak Somtam Menu

Obsessed with pork, I can never disagree to order the BBQ Pork Neck (RM 18.90) and the BBQ Pork Neck Skewers (RM 10.90) both of which is almost polished with the later being the spotlight with the more tender texture and certainly more flavourful when comparing to the first. The fats layering in between the meats were in fact the most hindering factor for me but I still enjoy them, thanks to the delish marinating.

1.Rak Somtam @ Kota Damansara
2.Rak Somtam @ Kota Damansara

A typical mainstream order at every Thai restaurant, their Tom yam really is pretty impressive with those spicy seafood soup not overpowered by fish sauce instead, fragrant and aromatically balanced with a light hint of lemon grass coming through. Loaded with big prawns and oyster mushrooms, this Red Tom Yam Seafood (RM 19.90) is perfect for sharing.

4.Rak Somtam @ Kota Damansara
5.Rak Somtam @ Kota Damansara

Being Asians, we need our rice but this time around the Pineapple Fried Rice (RM 15.90) was a disappointment following the unusual addition of waxed meat and the least pronounced fragrant and aroma of the pineapple.

6.Rak Somtam @ Kota Damansara

And always wanting to have some vege in my meal, I asked for Spicy Glass Noodle Salad (RM 15.90). The mix of julienne vegetables gives it a nice crunch, while the mild chili kick married well with the sour tang. This one is lovely as starters and for sure is appetizing.

7.Rak Somtam @ Kota Damansara

The beverages has nothing much to shout about but would be necessary and much needed for those with lower tolerance to spicy food. We had Thai Milk Tea (RM 4.50) and Lemongrass Water (RM 3), both of which reasoned fairly with the pricing.

8.Rak Somtam @ Kota Damansara

Rail Canteen @ Kota Damansara, Sunway Nexis

Staying close to the root of Malaysian flavour, the Kluang Rail Canteen has brought the scents and flavours of the south to klang valley’s Sunway Nexis, and is the absolute right place to sample culture and tradition through history of culinary within the family’s specialties and home recipe passed from generations to generations.

Rail Canteen here is a welcome addition to the quiet and relatively new complex and dishes are cooked with a nod to authenticity with a reasonable selling price. The space is comfortable if not relaxing with a semi open bar prepping orders for drinks.

Popular to have earned a status within people of Kluang, this local coffee gets the same approval from all at the dining table that night. Kopi Ais(RM 3.80), Kopi Cendol Ais (RM 4.90),Teh Ais (RM 3.80), Three Layer Ice Cream (RM 9.80) and even their fruit juices were all amazing (especially when real fruits are generously made into glasses of thirst quenchers).

4. Kluang Rail Canteen

Those iced beverages are critical for some of their dishes. Nasi Lemak Ayam Berempah (RM 12.60), and Rendang Kambing (RM 9) were both rich and packed with local flavours we can all easily get used to. This Malaysian breakfast champions are offered in their rendition to assure a satisfaction guaranteed when it comes to serving size. Fragrant coconut rice surrounded by lovely boiled egg and cucumber, plus the crunchy fried ikan bilis with the signature spicy sambal (there are 4 options-cockles, onion, sotong, and prawn) and all tied together with a fried chicken horded with spices. (Also available to pair the nasi lemak is ayam goreng masak merah, ayam rendang, and ayam goreng.) Otherwise, have the nasi lemak in plain (RM 6.50) and pair with lovely lamb cubes.

Fan of noodles can enjoy the Mee Hoon Siam (RM 6.50) and Mee Kari (RM 11.50), both packed with aromatic flavours from the herbs and spices. Whilst the curry gravy being slightly briny to me, the classic dish has at the same time earned some hardcore fan of theirs with the generosity of the portion.

Bmon Cafe @ Kota Damansara

Bmon Café is one of those tucked-away hidden pearl located at the first floor in the business park at the Kota Damansara, too eclectic to ignore among the immense amount of cafes within this enclave yet bogging standard family café within this proximate. The theme, as the name suggests, is all about the comic character created by Roy, namely Bmon. Guest can enjoy the art work at every corner of the café constructed in such so the environment creates a platform for artists to share and communicate. The amount of attention to detail has gone to the ambiance with cute factor in everything from the comic strips on the wall to the decors and furniture.

Serving very homely and heartwarming selection of compositions, fill your hunger with decent approach of simple dishes ranging from All Day Breakfast (RM 16.90) to Wraps served with Fries (RM 12.90). Choose from mushroom, chicken mayo or tuna mayo to suit your palate.

9.bmon (15)

Also serving sandwiches, you’d find Turkey Ham (RM 14.90), Chicken Mayo (RM 13.90) and Tuna Mayo (RM 13.90) with croissant. And because prices ranged pretty reasonable, these selection would be sustainably popular especially the younger crowd and students.

Health conscious diners can still opt for what’s most popular amongst vege lover, Fruit Salad and Ceasar Salad (Tuna Mayo or Chicken Mayo) (RM 10.90). Sure it may not come with interesting combination with capers or fancy herbs like arugula, but the salad leaves were inevitably fresh and neat.

Other substantial items on the menu includes pizza or their very generously portioned of pasta selections. Mushroom Pizza (RM 13.90) and Hawaiian Pizza (RM 13.90) showcases what’s made possible in any kitchen with their simple ingredients. Made fresh to serve upon ordering, this one is a simple quick fix. With such simplicity, expect easy pasta option of either the red or white sauce. Chicken/Beef Bolognese (RM 13.90) instantly satisfy hunger with the hefty portion of spaghetti and that ample coat of sauce and Bolognese toppings. Selling no more than five each day, Bmon meticulously created what’s called the Hippo in the Pond (RM 14.90). With mashed potato shaped into a hippo like loaf before deep frying with breadcrumbs coating and topped with ham, crab sticks, hardboiled egg and some simple mayo dressing, this is served accompanied by some salad leaves. The “pond” is then filled with the cheese sauce and viola! You’d get the “hippo” bathing in the “pond”!

Such happy ambiance should not exclude desserts, and with the waffle mania going on in PJ, Bmon showcase their waffles namely Peanut Butter Waffle (RM 7.90) and Ice Cream and Fruits (RM 12.90). Albeit putting together very simple combinations, waffle texture was great. And pairing that with the selling price, it is a curate’s egg. Chocolate Mud with Ice-cream (RM10.00) is where we can witness the creativity and artistic skills from the kitchen crew. Plate was decorated with none other than Bmon himself and served with a scoop of ice cream drizzled with chocolate syrup and tossed with Kellogg’s corn flakes. Soft chocolate with freezing ice cream and the endless crunch from the cornflakes wasn’t the best combination that attracts my attention but would certainly magnetize any chocolate lovers.

Premium coffee available here at the Bmon Café and I must say this is a lovely place for a cup of joe. However, sorry to disappoint the coffee enthusiast because despite the very pretty free pour and latte art, they still have a big room for improvements. Having said that, their tea and mixes of concoctions is rather impressive.
