Menya Miyabi Hokkaido Ramen @ Sunway Pyramid

From miso to tonkotsu made with that long-simmered pork bone broth, to some simple light soya sauce-based soup, we’d have no problem getting the ramen fix in all sorts of forms in the Klang Vallley. In the most authentic and traditional restaurants to some fusion contemporary cafes that are always trying something a bit different than the rest, it really isn’t challenging to grab that steaming bowl of Japanese noodle in broth. But as to exactly where the best ramen joints are at, is still a question with no definite answer. The newest in Sunway- the Menya Miyabi Hokkaido Ramen is one with decidedly classic looking ramen bowls with short pages of menu featuring a handful of ramen selections. We’ve slurped our way through some of the noodles on the menu and rounded up the conclusion if the place is a dupe .

First and foremost, the place is about ramen. Because menu is straight forward with pictures and quick description. The short and simple menu makes ordering easy, but I recommend the seasonal Burnt Garlic . I personally can’t get over the brined noodles thanks to the powerful broth. But the loaded topped garlic were unmistakeably garlicky, the whole experience is rich, flavour and might even leave some wanting more. Gyoza (six pieces for RM13, 10 pieces for RM19) wasn’t something memorable and elegantly presented. But that is the character seen in typical Japanese dumpling. They are the perfect nibble.

The classics topped with onion, bamboo, slices of tender meat and most importantly and interesting surprise of a good textured and perfectly cooked noodles- we hardly get good noodle texture without a gentle reminder to the chef, that some of us in Malaysia do like the real deal of springy from ramen noodles. While there are some with thicker and more flavourful broth, the rest of the bowls of the order didn’t quite make it to please or pass the musters for value and depth of flavour. The rest on the table seemed to unhappy with the rest of the ramen choices. All Assari Sio Ramen (RM23) , Tonkotsu ramen (RM 25) and Yaki- Miso Ramen( RM 25 ) were either lightly seasoned or

Harvest Ground @ Sunway Geo

Eggettes, otherwise also known as the egg waffle has always been an iconic Hong Kong street snack. One that is almost a quintessential and while it has always been classic and nostalgic, it has been really common in the recent years for innovative modern twists. Harvest Ground seemed to nailed their rendition with some of the most local falvours. I was instantly drawn to Jack the Baba HK Eggettes (RM 20) because of that interesting combo of jackfruit and ice cream. The generous scoop of fresh coconut ice cream was pretty amazing along the shredded jackfruit. Plus the choice of salted gula Melaka caramel sauce, was quite a fascinating match all together to the otherwise boring eggettes that could really use a little more of that crispy.

The egg waffle isn’t the only innovative modern twist and despite being unsure of the core selling point, everything else is pretty innovative. Gua bao here folds a tender strip of fried chicken and even though their menu did not exactly make things easy when it comes to decision making, I was told the Taiwanese Ru Rou Fan (braised pork belly over rice) was good.

Fries for snacking didn’t quite leave a very impressive impression but these hits and misses can always be fixed with a better standard operating procedure.

Cooking Demonstration with In Style Hong Kong (Hong Kong Trade Development Council) by Hong Kong Celebrity, Luk Ho Miing

Being one of Asia’s most important financial hub, Hong Kong has always been known to be the most prominent business city in Asia. Characterized by the trade of business, lifestyle element and the high economic resilience in general, living standard in Hong Kong is growing rapidly in proportional to its economic growth- it is growing with a sundry of vibrant and unique lifestyle.

After a successful launch in Jakarta, Indonesia (2015) and Bangkok, Thailand (2016), the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) is hosting its third edition of In Style Hong Kong in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 7 th and 8th of November 2017. Over the next few months, we will see a series of sales promotion highlighting the Hong Kong lifestyle elements such as design-led products, trendy fashion and culinary experiences with special offers from selected restaurants.

And with focus on promoting Hong Kong cuisine, HKTDC has invited famous Hong Kong food personality, Luk Ho Min to talk about the uniqueness canton cuisine has to offer. Partnering with the Canton-i, we are participating in a demonstration by Luk Ho Ming and Chef Yim Yu King from the outlet and the tasting menu is the Double boiled honey fig soup with sea whelk and pork lean meat, Slowed cooked dragon groupa fillet , and Double boiled coconut with natural peach resin soup and almond. These three dishes are available for 2 months starting October 1st, 2017.

Fig is already well known as a wonderful source of calcum and fibre, but this is my first time having them in soup. Together with sea whelk and the high protein pork lean meat, this one goes through the double-boiling process to release the taste of all ingredients and lock in the nutrients in the soup.

I might have taken slightly a longer time to photograph this but the silky smooth and soft texture of the dragon garoupa served steamed with bok choy is still lovely despite it being a little cold (we all know fish dishes normally gets a little fishy when it’s cold). Nonetheless, I acknowledge the benefit of this dish and I appreciate the beneficial ingredients that are also in the dish. Wolfberries are not only known to add and enhance the flavours of the dish, but are also rich in antioxidant and beta carotene to help fight aging and cancer.

Lastly, we had a dessert I would request for a second serving at anytime. Served inside a real coconut, this one with nourishing peach resin in it is supposedly rich in collagen that does not only resemble the bird’s nest when it comes to texture but is also containing almost the same content of the bird’s nest.

Hana Dining and Sake Bar @Sunway Pyramid

Revamping their menu with addition of new dishes, Hana Japanese Dining and Sake Bar at Sunway Pyramid really emphasize on quality ingredients at reasonably affordable pricing. Of course when walking into Japanese restaurants, food quality, ambiance, service, and pricing is what we observe and on good days, we would sometimes get them all. On other days, we’d compromise a little. But here at Hana Japanese, despite being challenged by a coveted and rather posh looking facade that could be somewhat intimidating when approaching, they promise to create dining experiences and masterpieces.

Highlighting on new dishes on the menu this time around, the Happy Hour Bar Bites promotion offers a buy one free one deal for diners to lounge and have a relaxing time. Hailed from Taipei since 1997 and being the first oversea branch here in Malaysia since 2015, Hana’s Tapas Combo, is set to capture Japanese cuisine aficionados with affordable starting price of RM 35 (for 2 pax) and RM 50 (3pax) for their Classic Tapas Combo; and RM 70 (for 2 pax) and RM 100 (for 3 pax) for their Luxury Tapas Combo. Both combos allowed selections of up to 3 assortment from the Classic and Luxury Tapas ala carte menu respectively.

1.Hana Dining and Sake Bar @Sunway Pyramid

For the Classic Tapas Combo, the selection platter here is the Kaisen Shiso Kushi, Gindara Miso Yaki, and the Soft Shell Crab. The beautiful serving supposedly savour with one bite were all generous enjoyment with my absolute vote for the roasted cod fillet elegantly sitting on the fresh leaf of lettuce.

2.Hana Dining and Sake Bar @Sunway Pyramid

3.Hana Dining and Sake Bar @Sunway Pyramid

The more charming and exquisite Luxury Tapas Combo selects the Tenshi Ebi, a super lovely and robust combination of japnese raddish and Foie Gras- Daikon Foie Gras, and the Hotate Uni Toryufu- a plump scallop topped with sea urchin and truffle paste to sit on a crispy sheet of paper seaweed.

4.Hana Dining and Sake Bar @Sunway Pyramid

5.Hana Dining and Sake Bar @Sunway Pyramid

New entry also includes the Tori Yasai Mushiyaki (RM 15), a steam grilled chicken with vegetable tatar dressing, beautifully plated with a fresh ohba leaf.

6.Hana Dining and Sake Bar @Sunway Pyramid

Or if you are the sashimi kinda person, then Kani Sashimi Sald (RM 28) comes in serving presentation that’ll startle the diners. A vessel filled with a melange of diced sashimi and Kaori Bako. This crab meat salad is super lovely addition at communal dining thanks to the enormous serving portion.

7.Hana Dining and Sake Bar @Sunway Pyramid
8.Hana Dining and Sake Bar @Sunway Pyramid

Huge portion might be perfect for group dining but there is always something comforting and delicious for the solo diners as well. Hokkaido Cawanmushi (RM 15) isn’t just that lovely and children friendly dish, it is also perfect with plenty of ikura (salmon roe) if you are a fan.

9.Hana Dining and Sake Bar @Sunway Pyramid

10.Hana Dining and Sake Bar @Sunway Pyramid

With plenty of maki rolls on the menu, a Japanese cuisine afficionado would appreciate the Aburi Anago Maki (RM 60)- with plump and fresh slices of sea conger eel on each cut of the maki roll. Also in the roll is the velvet tetured avocado, and mince crab with cuts of salmon belly.

11.Hana Dining and Sake Bar @Sunway Pyramid

And that special creation of Chef Thomas and his Tempura Mango Cheese Maki (RM 40) for those who loves tangy and sweet savoury maki. Rolled with tempura prawn and shrimp roe, the savoury is spike with sweet aroma of mango and the slight tanginess before all these slowly masked by the creaminess of cheese slice.

12.Hana Dining and Sake Bar @Sunway Pyramid

Best to pair with booze, Kushiyaki Moriawase showcases assorted 6 kinds of skewers for RM 35 (Tsukune, Negima, Sasami Ume-shiso, Gyutan, Shitake, Okra) and here we tried the Negima – Grilled chicken and leek skewer, Shitake and Okra.

13.Hana Dining and Sake Bar @Sunway Pyramid

14.Hana Dining and Sake Bar @Sunway Pyramid

Dessert isn’t something too glamorous unless if you must have a sweet finishing, otherwise I’d say we move on to cafe bene. They have some of their homemade white sesame ice cream as well as the popular match flavour but they weren’t artisanal quality. Alas, was selling at a good price of RM 7 per scoop.

15.Hana Dining and Sake Bar @Sunway Pyramid

Chef Thomas leads the team and crafts dishes pairing with freshest ingredients to create this revamped menu for their customers. With almost 180 dishes even after revamping, the freshest ingredients creates both traditional as well as classic inspired Japanese dishes with modern twists, and a bar that offers authentic Japanese alcohol to pair with your food. Good place for good Japanese food with a drink or two.

Singleton Selects x Coffex Coffee @ Underground Societe Sunway

As mentioned on my instagram, a clever collaboration between the whisky and coffee has made its way to Malaysia. And it is far from being half- hearted, a branded attempt to tap into the continuous passion and creativity of mixologist Mr Kelvin Lee. Setting up a 2 month menu (starting 13 May onwards) at the Underground Society, Singleton single malt Scotch Whisky introduces Singleton Selects – an exceptionally inspiring move driven to deliver an incomparable dining experience for Malaysians.

This collaboration with Diageo World Class is about as authentic as they come. At the recent media launch; there’s no doubt about it – this has got to be the most authentic and fun pairing event I’ve ever experienced, the guests were briefed the effort and the ultimate goal of the event. With artisan coffee making their way into the heart of many Malaysians, there is a vibrant injection when it comes to bringing both the Singleton Selects x Coffex Coffee. And I’ve experienced it first hand to how this hybrid creates magic.

Showcased at the launch is their creativity and limitless boundaries to witness the neat flexibility of Singleton through this novel pair. Medias, guests, as well as other influencers and I got an opportunity to mix all four exclusive cocktails of premium coffee beans with each Singleton’s distinct expressions- each featuring a Singleton variant:

5.Singleton Selects X Coffex Coffee @ Underground Societe Sunway

The Singleton Ethiopia Style– The Singleton of Glen Ord 12 Year Old, with espresso syrup made with Coffex Ethiopia Limu Agora Yukro, honey dew, chocolate syrup, lemon juice and egg white.

6.Singleton Selects X Coffex Coffee @ Underground Societe Sunway

Paired with Avocados with Jamaican Pineapple Salsa, Stuffed Mashed Egg, Couscous, Cream Cheese.

7.Singleton Selects X Coffex Coffee @ Underground Societe Sunway
8.Singleton Selects X Coffex Coffee @ Underground Societe Sunway

The Singleton Presso-Tini – The Singleton of Glen Ord 15 Year Old, with Coffex Ethiopia Limu Agaro Yukro, Earl Grey syrup, lemon juice, and white marshmallow.

9.Singleton Selects X Coffex Coffee @ Underground Societe Sunway

Paired with Crispy Chicken with Kimchi Bao.

Next is my favourite of the night, a lovely peanut butter mix with velvety texture of the Singleton Ord 18 Year Old. Plus the torched meringue gave this a fantastic finishing almost semi solid instead of just liquid, I cannot wait to go back for this one.

The Singleton Naughty Butter – The Singleton of Glen Ord 18 Year Old with Coffex Ethiopia Limu Hunda Oli, peanut butter, and macademia nut syrup.

12.Singleton Selects X Coffex Coffee @ Underground Societe Sunway

Paired with Aglio Olio with grilled chicken and chili flakes.

Dessert pair also gets a standing ovation from those who fancy stronger caffeine finishing, thanks to those espresso ice cubes as well as affogato and the tiramisu. Be prepared to stay up all night long after this dessert.

The Singleton Kopi Ais- The Singleton of Glen Ord Signature with espresso ice cubes made with Coffex Ethiopia Limu Hunda Oli, and agave syrup.

15.Singleton Selects X Coffex Coffee @ Underground Societe Sunway

Paired with Tiramisu and Affogato.

Underground Societe did a reasonable good effort with the carefully crafted recipes inspired by the rich taste of The Singleton, but I would enjoy the cocktails with or without the food. My take is on the Naughty Butter- absolutely delicious.

With Ethiopian being the highlight, every hint of fruity finishing is distinctive but tasting note comes filled with surprises and more sophisticated when this single origin blend of perfectly balanced to yield that ultra smooth and fine texture that’s certainly a treat to the taste bud.

I am looking forward to more #SingletonMy projects in the future, especially the #SingletonSelects x Coffex Coffee.

Syifak Jaya @ Bandar Sunway

It is not rare to find authentic Indonesia food in the hub of student-populated town in Sunway, but Syifak Jaya at Sunway delivers just that. They are just about staying afloat in the middle of the town that is highly saturated with hipster cafés and they’ve made effort to keeping the place clean although simple and bare, with essentially what’s good for comfort dining. No reminiscent of Indonesia high end dining instead, they were resemblance of street dining culture but the atmosphere generally more relaxed.

1.Syifak Jaya @ Bandar Sunway

While this is looking a little empty, it might be a different story during the lunchtime rush hour. But moving swift3y on to the food, the sets of rice and fried chicken are served with fiery chili sauce, and of course the signature dark and sticky soy dipping sauce. Chicken and fish serving comes with fresh3y c4t cucumber slices and raw cabbages that go perfect with those bites of succulent meaty punch.

Garlic Roasted Chicken Rice Shop @ Sunway

Garlic Roasted Chicken Rice Shop at Sunway here brings a special spin to conventional chicken rice we are all familiar with. What looked so conservative and ordinary turns out to win the heart of many, especially the students from the adjacent campus. Serving only breakfast and lunch, the shop looks comfortable, not at all designed, but can get cramped up pretty tight with people lining up for take outs especially during the lunch hours. Make sure you have 15- 30 minutes waiting time to spare.

7.garlic roasted chicken rice shop @ Sunway

With a meal costing no more than RM 10 and the portion given, the owner was pretty generous and easy going. A simple one spread menu displayed at the entrance of the shop, making a selection of what to eat shouldn’t be rocket science.

The quick flow of customers means you defiantly get your chicken rice warm and fresh and true enough, our pick of Chicken Drumstick Rice (RM 4.50) was decent enough to put aside any debate- it’s agreeable that the meal is worthy of every cent. The chicken alone is tasty enough to take centre stage – smooth and not overcooked; and topped with the spotlight- fried garlic. A generous blanket of fried garlic gives the extra kick and fragrant to the otherwise ordinary plate of chicken rice is their signature if not the key to the very good business. Not stingy with ingredients, a dash of spring onions topped the serving, even though it is totally okay to eliminate it.
