Pork Rendang Nasi Kerabu at ANTE @ Solaris Dutamas

Celebrating patriotism with Pork Rendang Nasi Kerabu .Love it or hate it, this vibrant blue rice leaves a memorable impression upon the first sight. It is not unusual to see one but it is rare, and when spotted one, will be difficult to take your eyes off it. Served with ulam, the mix of flavour profile from the assorted raw vegetables that is being cut and chopped into tiny pieces puts together so much excitement on a single plate. Here at ANTE, kerabu meal is prep with some oink factor and the main protein source in this fiber and vitamin loaded portion meal is of course non other than their signature – pork. They celebrate patriotism this year with kerabu with pork rendang and I must say they are indeed some porky doyen when it comes to handling and serving them fresh in your dishes.

That is further confirmed when they rolled out other pork dishes and there’s absolutely a couple of it that was impressive. Pork come in all forms of cooking method—roasted, grilled, or even some frying until sizzling, with some being quintessential pork lover’s fav and some fusion twist that’ll guarantee salivating. And together with some booze, would be another perfect evening. Chermoula Spiced Pork Shoulder Steak was grilled so perfectly for amazing tenderness I will order this again anytime with add ons of more vegetables, not because I simply want my vege but because I also love their zucchini sides. Iberico Baby Ribs and House Smoked Bacon were charming. Meat is incredibly tender rand juicy, every bite tastes like luxury.

Bento Senya Express @ Plaza Mont Kiara

Bento Shop Senya Express at Plaza Mont Kiara is one that provides quick to go meals. It is a takeaway-friendly cubbyhole with a cashier counter to place your order and some semi ready made to-go lunch boxes placed side by side one another on their refrigerator racks, all inside a limited space lot. Making its way into the appetites of office workers within and around the neighbouring premise, these bentos are decently packed with very basic and fundamental series of Japanese classics. Sure it didn’t look very aesthetic and delicious at the first glance. But I gave it a go, and frankly was surprised with the freshness of the ingredients. If there is anything at all that I must be picking on would perhaps be the lack of vegetables in the bento. I had to order Green Salad (RM 4) to compensate the short of fresh vegetable but it’s not as if Malaysians love vegetables that much to begin with.

1.Bento Shop Senya Express at Plaza Mont Kiara

BBQ Pork Bento (RM 16.50) is assembled with BBQ Pork, Seasoned Egg, Macaroni Salad and Japanese Pickles. It isn’t exactly cheap on price, but it is filling and good as a bento. Grilled Saba Bento (RM 16.50) had the same sides but was strangely accompanied by pieces of deep fried chicken. Still it was nothing as strange as the macaroni salad. I thought it was too much carbs in one serving. Really, it would have been so much better if it is it was a little more balanced, if not in accurate ratio like the food pyramid.

Both pork and saba were equally impressive, store seemed really neat and clean, food nicely packed and safely placed at the fridge, so if there are anything that is falling short would be the limited seats. But having that said, it is a bento shop. Japanese bento is preferably to eat at room temperature but those who like really hot food, microwaves are self service available for reheating.

Chi Mac @Solaris Mont Kiara

Chi Mac at Solaris Mont Kiara is that perfect place for the night supper and Korean Fried chicken craving. Their best selling Ganjang chicken (RM 51) is quite a star when it comes to Korean fried chicken. This one is coated in sweet batter that is oozing with intense flavour. With fragrant seasoning and deliciously deep fried to perfection, this one is crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. The sweet tang tickles the taste buds and is delicious even when it’s cold. With their complimentary slaw salad, it could be even more enjoyable if the salad is not over dressed.

For a bit of spicy sweet and sour, with white meat being soft and tender to the bite; Yang Yum Chicken (RM 51) has that delish flavourful batter. It’s contradictory with clean diet but these devilish coats of addictive coating are to die for.

2.Chi Mac at Solaris Mont Kiara

When ordering the Cheese Buldak (RM 55). We were being warned several times by the staff, as if signalling us to stay away from this one. Clearly, he has no idea how much we love our spicy chicken . Korean spicy is distinctively satisfying with the fiery hot finishing and this one is cleverly toned down with the blanket of melted mozarella cheese.

3.Chi Mac at Solaris Mont Kiara

While frying up succulent pieces of tasty chicken bites, Chi Mac is clever to also serve the usual Korean favourite, except they didn’t do a very good job presenting the best of that authentic taste. Our Kim Chi Jiggae (RM 30) was a little diluted and lacking in flavour but the meal is still great accompanied by my favourite Makgeolli (RM 25).

Saemaeul Korean BBQ @ Solaris Mont Kiara

There might not be fancy slick furniture’s or sophisticated equipped tabletop grills like many other Korean BBQ joints, but this place is almost always full and packed with patrons. If you are looking for a good Korean charcoal barbecue fix, then look no further. This one here is considerably well round up with all the classics including delicious spicy pork, seafood, and marinated chicken alongside appetising banchans.

1.Saemaeul Korean BBQ @ Solaris Mont Kiara

Although slightly disappointed when it comes to the lack of variety on banchans, the variety of BBQ dishes and ala carte dishes easily make up the shortages. And to very honest, the sides are not the best of varieties but that has never been the highlight here. it is always their gills that steals the limelight.

2.Saemaeul Korean BBQ @ Solaris Mont Kiara
3.Saemaeul Korean BBQ @ Solaris Mont Kiara

And while there may not be supreme quality cuts of meat, be rest assured that they are all very fresh. Sliced Pork Belly (RM 25) is probably the best seller. And for that ultimate porky experience, go for the Gochujang Sam Gyeop Sal (RM 28). The spicy marination combined with those juicy fats and tender lean meat makes every chunk fantastic.

4.Saemaeul Korean BBQ @ Solaris Mont Kiara

Don’t forget the fresh baby octopus. For those who like that sweet freshness from strips of octopus tentacles can order the Jjuggumi Sutbul Galbi (RM 27). Charcoal burn contributes very little to the earthy char because octopus cooks very quickly before getting the char flavour. Instead, look forward to taste the freshness of this cephalopod species.

9.Saemaeul Korean BBQ @ Solaris Mont Kiara

And making sure that they are up to the latest favourite of Korean food lovers, they also have cheese on the menu. That’s right, any food lover would know of this ongoing trend now. But as much as i enjoyed the strings of melted cheese, we have seriously reached peak melted cheese trend so please wake me up when the hype has passed okay?

5.Saemaeul Korean BBQ @ Solaris Mont Kiara
6.Saemaeul Korean BBQ @ Solaris Mont Kiara

Spicy rice balls (RM 23) are getting popular but the thing about this one here is the standard serving size. Which obviously, would require more people to share it. Unless of course if you are a big eater. White rice mix with aromatic seaweed and delicious spicy sauce is so good if anyone is a lover for spicy food, this is your fix. Press it into your desired ideal size, eat it as it is or even give it a quick grill at the BBQ pit. Otherwise ask for the less fancy staple- Korean white rice (RM 5) for a heftier price.

8.Saemaeul Korean BBQ @ Solaris Mont Kiara
10.Saemaeul Korean BBQ @ Solaris Mont Kiara

I am surprise the stews aren’t as spicy as I thought it is, and it’s a good thing because the heat from the boiling hot pot plus the already heated up grill upon us already got me thinking about bingsu down the road before I’m even finished with the meal. But hey, if not then there is always your Korean booze to go with it (we had the rice wine).

Occupying the corner lot, there are plenty of seats semis alfresco but unless it is a cool day, it does not quite matter whether it’s is indoor or outdoor.

Meat the Porkers – Pork Biryani @ Solaris Dutamas (outside Publiika)

Leave your diet at the door: the pork dishes at Meat the Porkers at Solaris Dutamas (outside Publika) – the first iconic pork briyani restaurant- are some of the most unashamedly porky, calorific bad boys in this neighbourhood, and even in the whole of Asia. Don’t feel guilty with those tender bites of juicy pork meats in their authentically spiced Pakistan flavours for they are one of the kind that is a must for pork lovers.

3.Meat the Porkers
4.Meat the Porkers

The pages on the menu with plenty of dishes can be intimidating to those who is not familiar with the dishes but Meat the Porkers cleverly compiled a single page to recommend the best selling and the must try. The kitchen obviously excels in biryani rice so the Siew Yoke Biryani (RM 28) is very highly recommended especially when they cleverly put away only the skin from the roasted pork belly and lets the rest of the belly layers sink inside the moist and fragrant basmati rice.

7.Meat the Porkers

Naan is outstanding if not over burnt and bacon makes a surprise appearance with splendid cheese stuffed in it. Bacon and Cheese Naan (RM 15) with that generous amount of bacon chips is good to go on its own but we had it with the Makhanwala. Big chunks of tandoori pork cooked in luscious creamy tomato and butter gravy and then flavoured with dry fenugreek leaves makes the most perfect Butter Pork (RM 28) I’ve ever had.

5.Meat the Porkers
9.Meat the Porkers
8.Meat the Porkers

After a refit a in 2016, the restaurant formerly known as Fiercer than Fierce is now visually more welcoming and with the entry of pork as a draw factor, Meat the Porkers is even more so to be taken seriously when everything sings freshness and flavours. Prices are pegged slightly at the sharp end for a meal, but are totally worthy and even more admirable among pork lovers.

Kopenhagen Coffee @ Mont Kiara (Kiara Vista)

Immaculately clean and minimal design must be one of the big draw at the Kopenhagen Cafe in Vista Kiara at Jalan Kiara 3, Mont Kiara. With the township busting a thriving and very real coffee scene it’s not only coffee appreciation that’s becoming a trend but the whole experience from even before the first sip. Caffeine fix and coffee sessions have come a long way and has been dramatically redefine. Now, it is both the environment and ambience that is just as important to coffee crawlers.

2.Kopenhagen Coffee

1.Kopenhagen Coffee

This newest hipster hotspot includes rotating pastry and cake menu with coffee and tea being the highlight at this minimally polished and chilled seats and tables. What started off as an understated, relaxed and joyful neighbourhood cafe gains their reputation so quickly thanks to the powerful and resourceful sharing platform known as the social media, is seen to have increasing their seats to cater the high demand.

4.Kopenhagen Coffee

Known to be a good place for instagram, and coffee of course, I must also compliment the very grammable cups and glasses for the beverages. Vanity aside, Denmark tea is very much a delight with combinations of flowers and leaves that’s soothing and calming. It pairs incredibly well with my tasty slice of carrot cake. Despite my skepticism for carrot cakes, I always end up ordering this whenever and where ever. Deep down, it is probably to convince myself that I would one fine day find the one that would blow me away. But no, I did not find that here. But I wouldn’t hesitate repeating this move at Kopenhagen, because it was good for the price so I have no complains.

Also great to pair your cakes and pastry is coffee of course but give them more time and hopefully there will be a good barista to skillfully froth the milk and to competently brew coffees that doesn’t burn the tongue. Otherwise, the range of good beans selection is to no avail at such beautiful coffee hub.

Go full Modern Korean @ Solaris Mont Kiara

Go full Modern Korean Fusion @ Solaris Mont Kiara

Solaris Mont Kiara is notoriously known to have bundled with plenty of Korean restaurants and cafes and with more interesting fusion dishes coming up, more contemporary Korean eatery are popping up and whether they sell with gimmick or not, it is always interesting to have fusion concept so long as they are delicious and not overpriced.

Go full in Solaris Mont Kiara is something I have in two minds whenever I passed by. At one point, they were almost dead and there were a period of time where a healthy crowd of patron is being spotted. There is only one way to find out what’s with the inconsistency so my friends and I visited to clear the doubts. The funky interiors themed with hippy menu are gaining pleasant impressions to begin with. There are interesting sandwiches, topokki, fried chicken, and aplenty with lots of cheese added to it. Clearly the cheese game is very strong here and it was all good right up till after we tasted our pick.

A bland and disappointed Sweet Potato Milkshake (RM 15.90) has very minimum aroma of sweet potato; almost nonexistent gave us a little skepticism to start off. Then the Go Full Korean Ham Sandwich with Fries (RM 22.90) with a thick patty of gourmet burger ham that was uninterestingly boring with no texture or tenderness but loaded with a thick scrap of melted cheese – probably the only selling point of the otherwise terribly composed sandwich.

More pulling factor to target cheese lover is their Korean Fried Rice and clearly, once again cheese maybe the only attractive take on this fusion fried rice. Korean Kimchi Fried Rice with Cheese (RM 21.90) was a total let down when it comes to the texture of their rice. The grains were soft and mushy, a little greasy and boring.

5.Go full @ Solaris Mont Kiara

Go Full Honey Butter (RM 25.90) fried chicken managed to redeem their reputation with 8 pieces from the half chicken with quite a tasty crunch coating. But then again, Chicken House is not far away so if it’s fried chicken that I crave, I’ll walk a bit further for tastier and juicier bites.

We could have all ordered the wrong thing maybe, but if my two cents are worth anything, I’d say don’t bother with this one.
