Xiao Long Kan Hot Pot @ Sunway Velocity

Hot pot has been around for as long as I can remember, and I’ve been loving all sort of hot pots for the longest time. The recent trend that is rapidly growing in the last couple of months is none other than the Chinese hot pot. The concept of hot pot is pretty simple- simmering meat cuts, assorted vegetables, and maybe some noodles in various choices of broths, of which is probably most of the time the draw factor to the hot pot experience. Chinese hot pots have come to more than merely just culinary and cultural experience. It is now a form of relaxing enjoyment involving more than just actively digging into what’s cooking in the pot. The most popular hot pot trend right now is one that comes with more than just a room filled with steams and noises. It is one that comes with exceptional attentive and warm service, and sometimes even some fancy albeit unnecessary presentations and performances.

Currently boiling hot is the “ma la” otherwise known as the “numb and spicy” hot pot experience with hefty dosage of Sichuan flower pepper added to the broth richly added with thick chili oil. This is one of the most famous variations of the Chong Qing hot pot, and it is indeed having its moment now. Chong Qing is the city believed to be the birth place of hot pot in China, but the unique spicy and pungent flavor that reflects the history of the place has since travelled all across the globe so we can now experience the similar, if not the exact same culinary experience.

Sunway Velocity where hot pot spots are aplenty, this one caught my attention with the fancy display and their barbie doll meat presentation. Not that I am into it- I actually thought it wasn’t very appealing, but I thought it will be an attractive gimmick most people would appreciate. Alas, I didn’t manage to order that particular dish mostly due to my lack of proficiency in Mandarin. Here at the Xiao Long Kan Hot Pot, everything is mostly in Mandarin including the signage, putting that as the foremost upfront hindrance to locate the outlet.

Sauces are basic with freshly chopped chili, garlic, coriander and spring onion. As soon as the pot of broth is brought to the built in stove table, the meats and vegetables follows tightly after. All plates come with suggested cooking time as printed on the menu, so be ready for a mouth-numbing spicy hot pot experience soon after. We celebrate the creative soup and hot pot temperature with freshness mainly from land because the sea harvest wasn’t as intriguing. All meat balls, pork blood, pork intestine , tofu, mushroom, and the signature marinated pork rib were amazing except the pork belly slices which could have gotten more applauses if served slightly thicker.

HO HO Steamboat, Cheras on a regular weekday.

Some of the best time to enjoy the hotpot is when the temperature drops, or whenever it gets chilly after the rain. That happens most of the time but hotpot lovers really don’t regard that as factors for them crave and love for steamboat or hotpots. Malaysians crave steamboat all year round, but I am just surprised to see a few establishments operating side by side within a same row of premises here in Cheras. Settling with the one with the most crowd, we put our bets on HOHO Steamboat. And while they don’t offer a range of innovative soups and flavours, they have fresh crabs and seafood, as well as a wealth of other ingredients to dunk into the pot. We were told by the service crew that he would gladly return our money or exchange a new serving if we are not happy with the quality of their crabs. That is something highly unlikely to be heard from other steamboat restaurants so I really do admire that. In the 2 in 1 pot, we had clear and tomyam soup side by side and take note the later guarantees an intense flavor and mouth numbing sensation.

3.HO HO Steamboat Cheras

To keep up with the demand and to keep things interesting, many restaurants throw plenty of gimmick and trendy twists to the regular pot of soup. Some offers assorted soup based, while others make sure they are cut above the rest when it comes to choices of ingredients. The standard set here is a bit limited when it comes to premium ingredients, so I’d suggest spending a few more ringgit for some add ons or alacarte selections. Unlike most steamboat restaurants, they have noodle dishes in the menu, as well as things like the barbeque chicken wing. I’ve yet to find out if barbeque chicken wing is a pairing partnership with HOHO Steamboat restaurants, but they seemed to be available at where HOHO steamboat restaurants operates. The one in Bandar Puteri Puchong was very memorable so I went ahead and ordered the barbeque chicken wing here. Turns out, they were delicious as well. Also, on the table for the night was the Lala Meehon which wasn’t anything too fantastic that’s not to be missed, but at the same time not too much to complain.

Wine Pairing at Cincin (Cheras)

A lot of the time when we’re eating out, we simply buy a bottle probably just because we like the sound of it and clandestinely hope that it will cope with everything we throw at it. But let’s just face it, we can’t always order a different bottle to go with every single dish at the course. However, the recent wine pairing menu had impressively put 2 bottles and sailed through quite a tricky series of dishes including the starter Caesar Salad, the Clear Soup with Truffle Oil, Grill Portobello with Bacon and Cheese and the Poach Salmon with White Wine Broth.

5.Wine Pairing at Cincin (Cheras)

These were the first few dishes paired with Viognier and Arinto variety here at the Cincin pairing and Christmas menu. I personally feel that Caesar dressing is notoriously difficult to match with wine, let alone the type of green that is in the salad itself but tangy generally isn’t a wine killer. Except here they totally killed the experience, overdressing and drenching the greens in the creamy dressing.

6.Wine Pairing at Cincin (Cheras)

This pale colour wine that’s rounded with balanced acidity following a mellow aroma of dew highlights characteristics of the accompanying tasting notes so to begin with, Viognier and Arinto closely resembles one another when it comes to the floral qualities. Hence if you like most Portugal wines and you like your wine brut to go with your meal, this one is very easy to drink and pairs super lovely with soft seafood.

7.Wine Pairing at Cincin (Cheras)

The second bottle to pair with the Grilled Lamb Rack with Red Wine Rosemary Sauce and I am definitely happy with the choice of pairing. Lamb is a constant on menus in almost every wine pairing but it is usually challenging to pair with blends but tonight, each bite of lamb with Aldeya Tinto did a great job with that perfect balance and easy drinking of that complete round up of acidity and juicy aftertaste.

The night ended with some lovely dessert, with my heart absolutely melting all over the Ballerina and the Hojicha Crème Brulee. Both the dessert making that grand finale so superb, everyone seemed to polish their bowls and plates clean.

And moving on to warm up the stomach with some gorgeous gooey of savoury comfort, this Roar of the Dragon package is serving Braised Dried Scallop, Crabmeat and Seafood Soup. Replacing the posh choice of sharks fin, most of the consumers have come a long way through evolvement from making shark fin a compulsory starter soup when it comes to a full luxurious Chinese meal.

6.Lunar New Year Culinary Delight @ Silka Hotel Cheras

With us ushering the year of Rooster, their Chef totally nailed their Double Boiled herbal Chicken with a potent use of all the beneficial goodness of traditional Chinese herbals. Things like red dates, goji berry, a whole lot of roots and rhizomes that nourishes on top of the robust flavours to the otherwise bland chicken. This one was a pleasant to consume with the chicken cooked to perfect softness to fall off the bone with very minimum effort. And at a traditional Chinese banquet dinner for the Lunar New Year, fresh seafood completes the meal with prosperous significance. Steamed Red Snapper with Light Superior Soya Sauce is one of the reason why the the package is available only with a booking of 3 days in advance. The flakes are solid and sweet, so fresh it would do great without the sweetness from the sauce. At the same time, Baked Tiger Prawns with Oats takes the taste buds on an explosive journey with the aroma from the oats and the fresh sweetness from the tiger prawns.

The meal package is inclusive of the Braised Lo Hon Chai with Broccoli and Fragrant Fried Rice with XO Sauce. Many of us love the spike of slight spicy in from the XO sauce fried rice. On top of the decent wok hei in the dish, this one pairs really well with the broccoli.

Pork Organ Pepper Soup @ Taman Midah Cheras

Pork Organ Pepper Soup at Taman Midah, Cheras is apparently notoriously well known and popular amongst the neighbourhood patrons to offer fresh and delicious offal if you are into this kind of delicacies. Being the anchor at this row of stalls, they attract a healthy number of crowds – it would be difficult to miss the stall, especially when they lit their business signboard brightly with Chinese name that apparently spelt Wong Hoi San.

1.Pork Organ Pepper Soup @ Taman Midah Cheras

The menu were simple clear and direct, with pictures of every dish laminated and filed in a booklet, making it easy to order even if reading in Chinese is impossible for you. I didn’t have any hard time ordering. In contrary, everything was swift right from when upon seated. Service is prompt with helpful lady recommending appropriately and accordingly. We asked for something light and she recommended their signature pork organ soup(RM 10)- a bowl of hot steaming soup filled with a medley combo of everything you can think of inside the pig.

2.Pork Organ Pepper Soup @ Taman Midah Cheras

Top up the comfort with their velvety bowl of Pork Intestine porridge(RM 6), and some simple Vegetable (RM 6)and it quickly sums up to a lovely meal.

If there is some more space, this Lala with Rice Wine (RM 12) is superb. With a light hint of alcohol at the finishing of every sip of that boiling hot soup, this one is fantastic on its own.

5.Pork Organ Pepper Soup @ Taman Midah Cheras

This place offers some few simple dishes but it certainly doesn’t come with hefty price tag. Be there on Saturday and take a stroll at the weekly night market next to it. The amount of things to see and to buy is crazy fun. I have them saved on my snapchat here.

Pretty on Plate @ Cheras, Taman Maluri

Pretty on plate in Taman Maluri Cheras is a patisserie dessert café is one place that would not disappoint any sweet tooth or fine dining lovers. With their ultimate selection of indulgent desserts, the menu is crafted with the finest and freshest ingredients in mind.

9.Pretty on plate in Taman Maluri Cheras

They take orders for customized cakes, and in the café, you’ll get a good selection of sweet plates. Serving mainly desserts, the two page menu is easy but at the same time difficult to decide on just one. With quite an extensive flavours that could be a little fancier than the usual dessert parlor, the spotlights are on their signature plated desserts, and a sampling platter that comes with eight small portions. It was a pity I didn’t get to try that. I watch the platter being taken out from the display fridge as I approached the counter. But then, I enjoyed the fun Brioches (RM 15) with fillings like vanilla custard and chocolate, peanut butter, and topped with ice cream. Puncturing the pastry is a syringe and although totally unnecessary, I think we all enjoy feeding this one the social media.

And from 6pm onwards, here is when you can order some very pretty plate of dessert, made to order with more delicate effort. This one is a fantastic mix of peanut butter mousse with caramelized banana and my favourite yogurt ice cream on top of some pop rocks for that sweet popping finishing (RM 35) .

Beverages are simple, with cold presses and fresh brew of coffee or tea to accompany the sweet indulgence. The Tea in Pot (RM 12) is subjected to availability and if you are ever lost in decision making, they are more than glad to recommend accordingly.

The friendly staffs and that immaculate interior is lovely but isn’t great enough to have me revisiting if I’d have to embrace the traffic. However, I’d see myself to frequent this place if I am living in Cheras.
