Samgeori Butcher’s BBQ @ Trec KL (YG Republique Malaysia)

Korean restaurants can be found dotted all over town these days, with most joints offering trendy and fashionable fusion dishes. It is not difficult to settle with one that has a lot of fancy stuffs or variants of popular in-trend flavours- most of which are much promoted by the K-pop culture. Speaking of K-pop, Samgeori Butcher’s 삼거리 푸주간 is probably the only one that serves classic BBQ grilled meats of the best quality. This BBQ grill restaurant was inaugurated and celebrated with Big Bang’s member Seungri at the launch so look out for his signature on the wall when you visit.

The dining room – like the menu – is most authentic and elegantly comfortable; with impressive space to ensure good ventilation, and warm lighting to set the mood. Prices are not impressively but the meats are crazy delicious. The table-top grill was heated before the meat was added, leading to the gentle charred, with a tender centre and a decent line of buttery fat along one side.

Together with this meat set : Butcher’s Sampler (RM 210) of four different meat cuts, is a complimentary soup of either kimchi jiggae, dwenjang jiggae, and hot pepper soup. I sampled both kimchi jiggae and dwenjang jiggae and I’ll have to say that the first was satisfying, pleasingly spicy and sour from the well-aged cabbage it contained; and the second was comfortingly containing a generous quantity of deliciously tender shredded beef, the bowl of soup was rich and yummy.

Don’t expect an entire table filled with pickled vegetables and kimchi because we are looking at aged meat cuts preparing to steal the limelight. Iberico neck, belly, shoulder and abanico is a must for pork lover. But Samgeori Butcher’s 삼거리 푸주간 serves not only premium pork & beef that is crazy delicious because there are other dishes thats really good. The Butchers Pork Fried Rice (RM 25) is lovely with meat and a bright sunny side up. The plump grains were resonant with aged kimchi and sesame oil, I enjoyed it very much.

Samgeori Butcher’s isn’t known for its sparkling service, but I found the staff warm and efficient. Requesting to have our meats grilled on behalf of us did not have them slacking and not practising their standard operation professionally. Every meat cut was presented to us prior to grilling. Pancake brought over from K-pub and the squid and pork skin cooked at your table

Mak’s Chee Cheesy Wanton and Champion Milk Tea @ 1 Utama

With festive around the corner and everyone in the mood for quirkiness, Mak’s Chee Wanton noodle at 1 Utama shopping mall recently launched a super fancy and delicious milk tea in a muscular body shaped bottle. This Champion Milk Tea (RM 6.90) combines the techniques of KamCha (the only international brewing completion on Hong Kong style milk tea) winners and made with 100% Sri Lankan Ceylon tea, the milk tea really quite the seamless marriage of rich brewed flavours and rich classic evaporated milk. This one is classy smooth, slippery and gloriously creamy to also hit you with a wave and perk of refreshing caffeine.

1.Mak’s Chee Cheesy Wanton and Champion Milk Tea @ 1 Utama

Ruling out this fancy bottle, the smoothness, and velvety robust flavour is actually unrivalled when it comes to Hong Kong milk tea in the mall. It’s really addictive and if you are already a lover of milk tea like me, you’ll love this one.

2.Mak’s Chee Cheesy Wanton and Champion Milk Tea @ 1 Utama

And while we had some fun drinking from this whacky bottle, I checked out their parcels of cheesy wanton. Once again being the trend setter, Mak’s Chee has created the delicious cheesy wanton- a parcel of fresh prawn with mozzarella and cheddar cheese enclosed in thin deep fried wanton skin that is crazy crispy and addictively unstoppable. Embrace the perpetually busy mall to get a taste of their signature wanton that exemplifies comfort food, but with a twist of the cheesy trend along the line. Crispy tasty with amazing texture on the outside and in it is a burst of fresh shrimp still juicy and sweet, with extra savoury from those cheeses in it even though it would be extra phenomenal with more generous portion of cheese.

3.Mak’s Chee Cheesy Wanton and Champion Milk Tea @ 1 Utama

Cheesy Wanton isn’t exactly the only thing worthy of a visit here because their refine noodle is something out of the ordinary to what Malaysians are accustomed to when it comes to wanton noodle. Unlike the egg noodle we are all familiar with, this one is looking a lot simpler yet essentially interesting when it comes to the variations derived solely from basic element of wanton noodle- noodle, broth and wanton.

5.Mak’s Chee Cheesy Wanton and Champion Milk Tea @ 1 Utama

A large Wanton and dumpling soup noodle (RM 16.90) here but is reasonable when every wanton has a whole shrimp with minced pork. Each parcel consistently sealed very nicely to pack all the flavours within every package of both dumpling and wanton.

7.Mak Chee’s Cheesy Wanton and Champion Milk Tea @ 1 Utama

Every packet of their wanton is filled with plump and fresh shrimp; I’ve enjoyed every bit of it. As for those dumplings, each of them is stuffed to the brim with delicious filling so if you want something more filling than shrimps, dumplings have pork in it but my heart and palate is won over by the Wanton Tendon Soup (RM 14.90).

10.Mak’s Chee Cheesy Wanton and Champion Milk Tea @ 1 Utama

Although the serving size is tiny but going large really isn’t necessary because another good way to make complete a wholesome meal is some vegetables. Unlike the usual wanton noodle that’s commonly accompanied by the some vegetables, this one has no vegetables in it. But, ala carte has vegetables to add to the meal. Vegetable with Roe Powder comes with that popular shrimp powder usually added to their wanton noodle in Hong Kong. No doubt the smell of dried shrimp powder sprinkled on top of the vegetable really helps stimulating the appetite.

11.Mak Chee’s Cheesy Wanton and Champion Milk Tea @ 1 Utama

Beverage menu is considered comprehensive with things like Teas and boiled sweet beverages. I had my Osmanthus Oolong Tea (RM 3.90) and Lemon Water Cress ( RM 5.90) and it was decent with nothing much to shout about.

Not to compare to the portion and pricing around our region because at Mak’s Chee Malaysia, it is most likely that the essential slurp experience would be replicated. The street original is an absolute steal despite the slightly expensive price for a very tiny bowl of noodle. Watch this on my snap stories here.

Madame Waffle’s Salted Egg Yolk Waffle

Food trends don’t end under any circumstances and the recent salted egg yolk craze are now in Madame Waffle. From Asian dishes like custard buns to the western delights like croissants; and now waffle, the trend still currently ongoing and picking up fast. Salted egg yolk has really proven its capability to blend with any food and now it’s gotten to waffles but whether or not this hybrid is worthy of the calories? Here is what we are about to find out.

1.Madame Waffle’s Salted Egg Yolk Waffle

When I was told there is salted egg yolk waffle with salted egg yolk ice cream, I’m thinking no way. Then I found out its real, Madame Waffle launched their own rendition of the coveted sauce- one that simple goes well with everything and anything bizarre, is the latest addition to this renown waffle joint. Salted Egg Yolk Waffle here will soon launch many a gushing Instagram post not only with their pretty plating, but the hypnotising thick golden yellow custard that escorts. Salted egg yolk wasn’t intense but was prominently obvious to many and at the same time inconspicuous to salted egg yolk devotee.

2.Madame Waffle’s Salted Egg Yolk Waffle

And get ready for the fear factor challenge (or a dive into paradise if you are huge durian fan) when the Musang Durian Crème Brulee is served right before your eyes. Or, you can smell it as it is being prepared. You would find a generous lump of durian Brulee, so a thin crusty crystallised sugar layer would crack to have a medley texture of both creamy luscious and crackling crisp.

3.Madame Waffle’s Salted Egg Yolk Waffle

The spotlight must be their Matcha Signature . Hands down and hats off such consistency in the lovely texture – light but never too airy or dense in anyway. Tiramisu Waffle didn’t appeal to me, only because I am not a fan of tiramisu. But, know that they pull things off with waffles alone (Matcha and Cinnamon Classic Waffles) , satisfying bites without toppings are always a good choice

6.But know that they pull things off with waffles alone, satisfying bites without toppings are always a good choice

Let’s not forget the lovely flavour of those Ferrero Rocher Delight, every chocolate fan would approve this. Fruits topping balances the bitter sweet of chocolate and even though not as generous, the toppings blends beautifully both on the plate, and on the palate.

7.But know that they pull things off with waffles alone, satisfying bites without toppings are always a good choice

Beverage menu offers a medley of creativity with things like Passionfruit Mint Soda, Ice Matcha Blended,Lemonade Soda, and caffeine drinks. Once again, barista Feng was present so naturally coffee is a must.

The BBP Gastropub @ The Club, Bukit Utama

There is no problem prying the kids from their ipads when there is plenty to do at the #theBBP at The Club, Bukit Utama. It’s indoor and semi alfresco dining experience offers stations with delicious food and bar with beers and other boozes; and loaded with kid-friendly activities. Indoor, there are some corner tables slightly cozier than the sunny but breezy alfresco; and outdoor, there are plenty of space and gazing opportunities over those high stools and bar tables.

1. bbp @Bukit Utama The Club

And the food stations are great not only for sampling, but to have your food preparation done upon order.

The décor with alfresco and high stools and plain picnic tables at the courtyard under the sun (although I highly doubt many Malaysian’s actually appreciate dining under direct sunlight) couldn’t be simpler, nor could the delicious Pork Platter of a combination of tasty bet for beer pairing. And on any regular day in our weather, beers are the best cooling ingredient at any time of the day.

6.the BBP bukit utama

I recommend sharing and easily some 10 laps of extra swimming after the meal. Pork Sausage (Hungarian and Italy) (RM7 per piece), Pork Bacon Mash Potato (RM6), Charcoal garlic bread (RM12), Caramelized Pork Belly (RM18), BBQ Iberico Pork (RM40) and Pork Knuckle of either half (RM40) or whole (RM75) serving to fulfill your pork craving.

Raw selection is equally attractive, I am happy with the salad bar. Oysters are attractive if you fancy them but it wasn’t serving impressive sizes. Oysters on the other hand, are charged per pieces accordingly.

The BBP launch took place last November and from what’s observed at the launch, this place is great for parties or simple a family gathering or a simple catch up with friends. Take a posse and book, or insist on sitting at the bar for maximum enjoyment over a booze or two.

Grid & Go Waffle Kiosk @ 1 Utama (One U)

Located slap bang in the middle of walkway at the GSC cinema, Grid and Go in One Utama (1U) shopping mall is prepared to take waffle into a grab and go trend with swift and quick operational team, offering freshest of fine waffles. Serving a fantastic specialty series and premium series at RM 6 and RM 7 each, these light munches are great bites to take and go in convenient eating sizes. Plus, the servings are totally smuggle friendly (ahem..)

1. grid and go 1u

Menu is simple and perfect to accommodate quick and fast ordering, and keeping the menu simple is currently brilliant. And of course, these goodies are prominent carbo so pair that with their house signatures, all served in grab to go paper or plastic cups. I’d say coffee connoisseur to please stay away from their coffee but it certainly is harmless for that caffeine fix. The Sparkling Yuzu juice (RM 5.50) is clever and refreshing, most importantly is guilt free without those extra sugar because the sparkle was merely carbon and not soft soda beverages.

2.grid and go 1utama
3. Grid and go waffle 1 utama

With expedient working space to prep the waffles at speedy pace, each grab is lovely and fresh; with fantastic texture slightly sugar coated on the outside for that extra crisp which is perfect especially when it cooled.

Ultimately, Grid & Go emphasizes on authenticity and having quick waffles to grab and go means no fancy toppings; instead, these Belgian dough were dense and chewy on the inside and crispy outside with clever options of either the house specialty or the premium series to offer. With difference of RM 1, premium has more intense fragrant momentously coming from layered pasteurized cream.

MyeongDong Topokki @ 1Utama

Topokki, the fast food of Korean street snack now available and operates at MyeongDong Topokki at their second outlet in One Utama (1 Utama), along with many other set meals to offer. Keeping their prices low and reasonable for inside a mall, service is quick and this pit stop conveniently lets you grab and go to enjoy the chewy rice cake.

Even at its country of origin, homemade rice cake is rare to come by. Like what you’d be getting on the street in actual MyeongDong, expect commercial and store bought recipe here as well at the 1 U’s Myeong-dong Topokki. With bright colours and walls plastered with wall papers with photos of MyeongDong subway, dining-in would be served in bowls while takeaways are conveniently in paper bowls and both to be enjoyed classically with a skewer stick, exactly the way it is savoured on the street in Korea.

1. Myeong-dong Topokki
2. Myeong-dong Topokki One Utama

Good rice cakes sustain its chewiness for few hours, but those are rare and almost impossible to buy them. Their Original Toppoki떡볶이 (RM 10.80) here doesn’t go stale when eating right up to an hour but is obviously not castella soft anymore by then. We love the fish cakes soaking in the chili-speckled sauce and the zing of fire was fiery amazing for me who loves spicy food. Warning follows if you decided to take up the spicy challenge option; this one is for the adventurous ones.

3. Myeong-dong Topokki 1 U

Their Kimali twikim 김말이 튀김, a popular street snack food with plenty of crunch and packed with flavours is no disappointment and there isn’t many places that sells this so this one is quite the winner already. Kimali (RM 8.50) here is served pretty and those deep fried rolls of glass noodle are quite a delight for sharing. And if anyone is wondering what’s the closest resemblance Malaysians would be familar with? That’ll be fried sushi roll, except this has more texture.

4. Myeong-dong Topokki 1 Utama

Stews and soups are mandatory in any Korean eatery so likewise, this one here has a quick and good selections and we sampled the Kimchi Jjigae 김치찌개 (RM 16.80) with chicken in it and if I must say, I still like the pork version best. But since they are pork free, chicken, beef and seafood are the only only options available. The meal presents itself in a combi plate with rice, and the ban chan 반찬 of course. The kimchi didnt win me over but everything else including the not so short grain rice did.

5. Myeong-dong Topokki 1 Utama
6. Myeong-dong Topokki 1-Utama

With the globalisation of Korea ‘s entertainment industry, fast comfort food in the country like instant noodle quickly becomes popular among the youngsters here. The Hangul Chicken Ramyun (RM 16.80) resembles our quick 3 minutes noodle that we cooked for supper, thanks to the overwhelming sweetness from the cabbages in it.

9. myeong-dong topokki one u.

And like most of their sets, the chicken ramyun is served with their daily sides. Plus, that’s not the only thing that comes with this springy instant noodle. Their Kimbab was a delight; I wouldn’t mind eating this alone as main.

The meals extends towards convenience dining while the beverages range simply from simple bottled drinks to common sweet canned beverages to cure the spicy chili.
