Samplings on the Fourteenth Restaurant (MIGF 2018)

Early evening, the month of MIGF celebration, and the walkway to the Samplings on the Fourteenth Restaurant at the east tower of Berjaya times Square hotel were spacious. The restaurant was commodious, separated from the hustling noises from the street, high up on the 14th floor , with a killer view of KL city skyline. Staffs were all working in the wing, and essentially showing much enthusiasm to serve our table of 8. The chef’s table experience excels in their own way as part of the dining experience when customers were separated from the glass enclosed cooking space, providing diners with a view of the culinary action, without the heat of the noise.

With more than 24 years of experience in the food and beverage industry, Chef Val Murugan’s superintendence has earned Samplings on the Fourteenth Restaurant multiple awards with the most recent being Best Fine-Dining Restaurant, World Gourmet Award (2017) and the prestigious Malaysia International Gourmet Festival, MIGF (2015).

1.Samplings on the Fourteenth Restaurant (MIGF 2018)

In conjunction with the MIGF 2018, Samplings on the Fourteenth currently offers special MIGF Macao Cuisine with a 3-course set dinner priced at RM 178 nett per set. Showcasing Protugese Squid Salad as appetiser before a comfort soup of potato and kale to warm the get the palate ready for the entree of Macao Garlic Prawn and the main course of hyperminimalist treats of either Grilled Fillet of Marble 7 Wagyu Tenderloin or the Confit of Soon Hock.

5.Samplings on the Fourteenth Restaurant (MIGF 2018)

Both the entre and main happened to be my personal favourite for the evening. Macao Garlic Prawn were delightfully cooked beautifully and cleverly seasoned for a tantalising bite. I like both the prawn and the fish. The chef served not only fine seafood, but also steak that is likeable. Would have been greater if they checked the preferred cooking time for our meat – this one was a little cooked but given the friendly service with such gorgeous view; one would enjoy the ambiance enough to not remember what’s lacking in their dishes.

Sweet finishing demonstrated how we shouldn’t judge a dish by its plating but the Serradura and Macaron could really use a little styling work.

Samgeori (3Geori) Butcher at YG Republique Malaysia

We easily have almost close to authentic K-BBQ in Klang valley but to actually let you forget the fact that you are not in Korea, head on over to Samgeori at Trec KL. That’s right! YG Republique is now in Kuala Lumpur.

2.Samgeori (3Geori) Butcher at YG Republique Malaysia

Thick slices of top notch meat were served free flow for all guests at the grand launch ceremony. Chug it with those beers going around and for a second there I’ve forgotten my job because all I could focus was the delicious bite of well-balanced fat layering of pork belly. I really dislike pork belly but this one tastes amazing. Each bite was juicy and super moist with the perfect chew texture when the fat layer completely melts the minute you sink your teeth into it.

Of course, this inauguration was star studded. The launch of the restaurant was attended by celebrities and prominent stars whom left their signatures on the wall. Which also means that selfie with the wall becomes mandatory from then on. Big Bang’s member Seungri were present and trust me, the place was swamped with fans and securities.

I am absolutely in love with the Iberico pork belly and am definitely returning again for a proper dine and taste. Stay tuned to the proper review in the near future. Also, if you are directed to this page to see pics of your favourite celebrity, they were highly protected by tight securities I hardly catch a glimpse at all. Sorry.

Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) #QBR2018

The Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR), a tradition that celebrates the Commonwealth’s diversity to inspire people and the community’s pride as the baton passes between people, whilst at the same time bearing significance in engaging people from different walks of life, and increasing the sense of connection and understanding of one another. Embracing the modern and multicultural Commonwealth nation, the baton not only contains Her Majesty’s message, it also represents the spirit of the Commonwealth Game. Shining a light on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia and the Games to come, the QBR is the foremost way to take the Commonwealth Games experience to the public, not just in Australia where the Games are this time around, but to the Commonwealth nation as a whole. Commonwealth Games will show a different side of Gold Coast and I am already feeling super honoured to be a part of the relay that took place at none other than our very own Bukit Jalil National Stadium.

1.Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) #QBR2018
2.Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) #QBR2018
3.Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) #QBR2018

The GC2018 Relay is the longest and most accessible in history, travelling through the entire Commonwealth for 288 days and 230,000km. Since its launch from Buckingham Palace on 13 March 2017, the Baton has inspired athletes and fans across continents. Arriving in Malaysia alongside the blue surfing koala, Borobi- the official mascot for XXI Commonwealth Games in 2018, and is set to be visiting the remaining 15 Commonwealth nations in Asia and Oceania before arriving in Australia on Christmas Eve, we were thrilled and absolutely inspired at this Malaysia leg. The baton arrived in Kuala Lumpur on the 16th October, before departing again for Brunei on the 21st October.

7.Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) #QBR2018

It will be 60 years since a Baton first carried Her Majesty’s message to athletes of the Commonwealth at the Cardiff 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Wales and this beautiful piece of art made from Macadamia wood, stainless steel and reclaimed plastic is a symbol to past, present and future. Design Works Principal Alexander Wall said they were inspired by the “boundless energy” of the Gold Coast and believes the “bold and beautiful” Baton reflects the “people, place and spirit of the Gold Coast”. The city is rich in contrasts and full of optimism and it was an absolute joy to be a part of the short yet significant run. As the occasion ended with a quick press con, it is confirmed that Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will generate a good economical impact and would offer the side of Gold Coast we have yet to experience. I will be looking forward to the vibrant food scene on top of the unique Australian culture tradition. We have seen how Australia contributed in the distinct advancement when it comes to dining and how it has been embraced in the culinary world.

Baking with Panasonic Cooking

Panasonic Cooking House Workshop

It’s national dessert day and when else is best to share this dessert recipe I recently obtained at the Panasonic Cooking House Workshop led by Chef Collin Lim if not today? Those who followed my insta stories would have probably seen me posting stories from the event itself but to those who have not; this one is a keeper.

1.Panasonic Cooking House Workshop

2.Panasonic Cooking House Workshop

Together with Panasonic Cooking, we made Unicorn Cupcakes and this easy recipe makes 7 of them.

5.Panasonic Cooking House Workshop

3.Panasonic Cooking House Workshop

4.Panasonic Cooking House Workshop

Ingredients for cupcake:

110 g plain flour
1.5 tsp baking powder
125 g butter
100 g castor sugar
2 eggs
0.5 tsp vanilla essence
2 tbsp milk

6.Panasonic Cooking House Workshop

7.Panasonic Cooking House Workshop

Ingredients for toppings :

White fondant Buttercream in various pastel colours Edible gold dust Black edible marker

1. Preheat Panasonic Electric Oven to 180°C on upper and lower tubes.
2. In a bowl, sieve together flour and baking powder.
3. In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar until white and fluffy.
4. Add eggs one at a time, creaming well in between each addition. Stir in vanilla essence.
5. Fold in flour mixture. Stir in milk. Be careful not to overmix.
6. Fill cupcake cups to about 2/3 full and place them onto baking tray.
7. Bake for 20 — 25 minutes or until cooked. Cool.
8. Decorate with fondant and buttercream — Make horns (push a toothpick halfway into each horn) and ears out of fondant and dust with gold dust, then leave to dry. Cover the cupcakes with rounds of rolled fondant. Attach the horns to the cupcakes. Pipe buttercream stars around the horns and attach the ears. Finish off with drawing the eyes.

8.Panasonic Cooking House Workshop

We had a lot of fun here and the cupcakes were baked beautifully and evenly with Panasonic ‘s newly launched 38L electric oven. Barking made easy and swift with utensils by Chefology and Chef Collin did a fantastic job guiding us through the workshop.

9.Panasonic Cooking House Workshop

Panasonic is celebrating the launch of their latest addition in their electrical appliances, the Panasonic Electric Oven NB-H3800SSK. Retail pricing at RM 669, Panasonic Cooking hosted this baking workshop at 1Utama with the tag line “Greater Flavours with Little Effort” and fellow influences are getting a glimpse of the easy to use and comprehensive functions the oven can offer. This Unicorn Cupcake recipe is one of the 12 recipes featured in the “Delightful Meals” ebook and at the same time, we also baked the salted egg yolk cheesecake with cornflakes crust to commemorate product partnership with Kellogg’s Malaysia for this event. Here’s the recipe for Salted Egg Yolk Cheesecake with Kellogg’s Corn Flakes Crust.

10.Panasonic Cooking House Workshop

11.Panasonic Cooking House Workshop

Makes 4 cheesecakes

Ingredients for the cheesecake:
250 g cream cheese
50 g sugar
8 g cornflour
3 egg yolks
55 g cream
1/8 tsp salt

Ingredients for the salted egg yolk filling:
2 salted egg yolks (fully cooked, use egg yolk only)
20 g butter

75 g Kellogg’s Corn Flakes
35 g melted butter

For garnish, some Chicken floss

1. Preheat Panasonic Electric Oven to 180°C on upper and lower tubes.
2. To make the base, grind Kellogg’s Corn Flakes into powder.
3. Combine corn flakes powder and melted butter; press onto bottom of ring moulds. Chill.
4. For the salted egg yolk filling, cream butter and sugar then add in salted egg yolk followed by the remaining ingredients and mix well.
5. Place mixture into a piping bag and pipe into small dollops and freeze overnight.
6. For the cheesecake, beat cream cheese, sugar and corn flour till light and fluffy.
7. Next add in egg yolks, cream and salt. Beat till all is well mixed.
8. Spoon some cheese mixture onto the crust then place a frozen salted egg yolk dollop into the middle.
9. Then cover with another layer of cheese mixture.
10. Bake the cheesecakes at180c for 20 minutes or until center is almost set.
11. Once done remove from oven and let it to set in fridge overnight.
12. Remove from moulds and top with chicken floss before serving.
Tips: Microwave the cheesecake for 20 seconds before serving to get the flowing lava effect.

With separate upper and lower heat settings ranging from 70c to 230c, and analog knobs simplifying all operations for the user, as well as its double insulated glass door to prevent burning hot oven door, I say the oven is user friendly.

Panasonic Oven

But what captured my attention most on top of the precise control, is probably the automatic Fermentation function that produces optimum environment for fermentation. And that means hello yogurt in bigger batch, salut french loafs and annyeong kimchi. I’ll be sharing my experience and more cooking recipes with this oven soon.

Carlsberg Smooth Draught in 325ml pint bottle

Carlsberg Smooth Draught in 325ml pint bottle

Now you can get draught anytime, anywhere with Carlsberg Smooth Draught . That’s the tagline we have been talking about all night long at the trade and media launch recently at the Eight Gourmets Gala (EGG), Pinnacle Sunway as we clink our sleek single-serve Carlsberg Smooth Draught in 325ml pint bottle. Carlsberg Malaysia answered many beer lovers’ quest for freshly tapped beer anytime, anywhere by introducing Carlsberg Smooth Draught. It may now be probably the smoothest beer in the world in a single-serve pint bottle.

1.Carlsberg Smooth Draught in 325ml pint bottle

2.Carlsberg Smooth Draught in 325ml pint bottle

While it may appear to be just an introduction of a new packaging but to the brewer, this is a proud innovation and revolutionary development as Carlsberg Smooth Draught is brewed longer for a signature smoothness and enabled one to get draught anywhere. Plus, there is really no complain to this new size – I personally enjoy this one a lot more. Carlsberg Malaysia’s Managing Director Lars Lehmann says: “Gone are the days where consumers can only enjoy a draught beer in a bar or pub equipped with sophisticated draught beer machine and tapping device. With our product innovation – Carlsberg Smooth Draught, we raised the bar to a whole new level by launching a sleek beautiful 325ml single-serve pint bottle for consumers to enjoy probably the Smoothest Beer in the World anywhere, anytime.” Carlsberg did a fabulous job putting a great opening act to entertain us on top of the free flow of bites and the new smooth draught in bottles.

I say we can simply carry our draughts around in a ideal bottle size for me to enjoy and finiah my beer before they turn warm and yuck. And here’s a good news- In conjunction with the launch of Carlsberg Smooth Draught in 325ml pint bottle, the brewer has activated advertising campaign and consumer promotion to drive awareness, trial and conversion.

This month, Carlsberg Smooth Draught roving team is scheduled to visit 800 selected outlets nationwide. Being one of Asia’s most important financial hub, Hong Kong has always been known to be the most prominent business city in Asia. Characterized by the trade of business, lifestyle element and the high economic resilience in general, living standard in Hong Kong is growing rapidly in proportional to its economic growth- it is growing with a sundry of vibrant and unique lifestyle.

After a successful launch in Jakarta, Indonesia (2015) and Bangkok, Thailand (2016), the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) is hosting its third edition of In Style Hong Kong in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 7 th and 8th of November 2017. Over the next few months, we will see a series of sales promotion highlighting the Hong Kong lifestyle elements such as design-led products, trendy fashion and culinary experiences with special offers from selected restaurants.

And with focus on promoting Hong Kong cuisine, HKTDC has invited famous Hong Kong food personality, Luk Ho Min to talk about the uniqueness canton cuisine has to offer. Partnering with the Canton-i, we are participating in a demonstration by Luk Ho Ming and Chef Yim Yu King from the outlet and the tasting menu is the Double boiled honey fig soup with sea whelk and pork lean meat, Slowed cooked dragon groupa fillet , and Double boiled coconut with natural peach resin soup and almond. These three dishes are available for 2 months starting October 1st, 2017.

Fig is already well known as a wonderful source of calcum and fibre, but this is my first time having them in soup. Together with sea whelk and the high protein pork lean meat, this one goes through the double-boiling process to release the taste of all ingredients and lock in the nutrients in the soup.

I might have taken slightly a longer time to photograph this but the silky smooth and soft texture of the dragon garoupa served steamed with bok choy is still lovely despite it being a little cold (we all know fish dishes normally gets a little fishy when it’s cold). Nonetheless, I acknowledge the benefit of this dish and I appreciate the beneficial ingredients that are also in the dish. Wolfberries are not only known to add and enhance the flavours of the dish, but are also rich in antioxidant and beta carotene to help fight aging and cancer.

Lastly, we had a dessert I would request for a second serving at anytime. Served inside a real coconut, this one with nourishing peach resin in it is supposedly rich in collagen that does not only resemble the bird’s nest when it comes to texture but is also containing almost the same content of the bird’s nest.
