The Fat Bee by Backlane Cafe @ The Jetty, Melaka
The Fat Bee Café at the Jetty (Melaka) is this modern European restaurant by the renowned Backlane Café. Currently they are serving amazing choices of food selection, alongside with booze on the menu to pair with your food. With their location close to the seaside at the jetty, and glass panels to usher plenty of natural light into the cafe, this place is absolutely quite a scorer and great when it comes to cafe vibes.
Range of dishes showcased plenty of effort on western dishes and a good amount on the classic local signatures. Making the most out of humble ingredients, the Fat Bee’s Nasi Lemak (RM 16) is considered a good way to represent Malaysia cuisine in the taste of Melaka- the beautiful plate of fragrant coconut rice with the usual toppings. Fried anchovies and peanuts add crunch; the freshly sliced cucumber offers freshness, and the sambal provides that extra kick that is not overwhelming, especially when eating it with that glowing sunshine egg!
Not crazy about rice? Order the Vietnamese Beef Noodle (RM 16.90), served with refreshing herbs that highlights all the aroma to make the dish light and easy to consume.
On their western offerings, I tried the Stuffed Chicken Leg (RM 26) and this prawn and chicken stuffing nicely accompanied by pretty sides. The simplest thing to do to a side potato dish, obviously, is to mash it up and put it on a plate. But to decide on purple sweet potato really hits the sweet spot.
For snacking or communal eating, there are interesting offerings but not one is to my liking.Korean Fried Chicken (RM 16.50) were served without any pickled sides and Sauteed Baby Octopus (RM 15) strangely came with dijon mustard. Truffle Fries (RM 15) is almost dull with very little truffle, almost close to none existing, so if you must have fries at this point of your visit, then I suggest you drop by Mcdonald’s drive through on your way here.
The Western fare also showcased Homemade Pasta and Pizzas. Mushroom Pasta (RM 21) was delicious with that generous fresh shitake, button mushroom, enoki, and porchini. Best choice for mushroom lovers.Duck and Apple Pizza (RM 25) spreads smoked duck, apple, and caramelized onion and held together with generous melted cheese.
For a sweet closure to this lovely meal, don’t forget to go for their cakes. They come from the Backlane cafe but we cannot be too reassured of its quality- some were not very fresh and because they all looked pretty, it can be deceiving. Make sure to double check with their staffs the arrival date of their sweet treats.
On the beverage list, there is a list of espresso press with no professional barista to brew; Latte flat white (RM 11), Long Black (RM 7.50), Iced Hazelnut Latte (RM 12) ; overpriced juices with fancy names – Fat Bee’s Favourite (RM 12) for a combination of apple orange grapefruit, and lemon, Sexy Betty (RM 13) for a mix of carrot, orange, apple, beetroot, and lemon; as well as some serious attempt to concoct – Honey Aloe Vera (RM 8.50).
I’d say we stick to the booze – a decent red or white house wine, or a short list of bottled beers to choose from.
Still, with a diverse delight on their food menu as well as their notorious dessert bar, his place currently earned the top spot amongst all the contemporary eateries in Melaka to date.
