Grand Shanghai Banquet at Seri Petaling here is a perennial favourite with yum cha fans. Especially when it is decorated to resemble classic canto mansion, with huge ancient Chinese wooden door to greet and welcome diners.

Featuring some of the more interesting dim sum on offer, like la mian, congee and things like Claypot fish head. I am a sucker for anything soupy, but the version here gets better, rich and flavourful with plenty of mushrooms and vegetables.

Fish served separately and cooked on portable stove with stock cooked into velvet rich and delicious starter. There’s good variety in general, with quite a few decent staple options like porridge and noodles or rice.

Their dumplings in general are soft, cloud-like and well made. Chef Special Dumpling (RM 9.80) and Xiao Long Bao with yellow wine (RM 9) are both chef recommended. We were expecting and looking forward to splitting at their soft white seams and spilling their sweet juicy insides, but that didn’t quite happen.

Steamed Pork Rib with Dumpling (RM 8.50) turns out to be regular steam pork rib we are all familiar with (not sure which part of it resembles dumpling) and this one have no tauchu (fermented beans) to be seen.

Innovation and creativity in their dimsum is charming.Crispy Prawn Mango Wrapped in fried Vermicelli with Wasabi Dressing (RM 13.80) and Crispy Corn Flake Crusted Tuna Rolls (RM 10.80) can only meant that you’ll have to try it to find out more about this complex mix of flavours and textures.

While the floor is a wonderland of steaming dimsum baskets, the kitchen interestingly fire up Chinese dishes as well. While we are there, we tasted the Grand Shanghai Special Spicy Chicken (RM 16). Something that resembles hainanese steam chicken but with extra kick of a tinge of spiciness that is irresistibly addictive.

Plenty of other favourites like fried cheong fun (rice noodle rolls) and extreme assortment dumplings make their way around, as do fragrant fried bites and baked tarts. The thing is, though, all the action is happening within the kitchen operating hours (kitchen rests from 3-5 before they run the dinner services).
