City center probably is one of the few places that is always glamorous with lots of high rise and city lights and hosts busy hubs for patrons to eat, drink, and watch football or listen to live bands. Whatever it is, there is something to offer at any corner here. And nested at a corner along the Jalan Yap Kwan Seng is the Songket Restaurant. A restaurant featuring traditional Malay flavours with contemporary influences to offer.

Launching a series of new dishes in March, the latest creation showcases dishes with fusion of local and international ingredients. Also celebrating the restaurant’s 4th anniversary, the restaurant engaged with media and generously serving us with a good range of buffet dishes. The buffet range certainly whet the appetite and here is where ordinary home dishes are made into extraordinary with some risk and rules bent.

Beautifully presenting theirNasi Kerabu and Nasi Minyak in wooden bucket, it leaves quite some impression before tasting it. But what’s really pretty was obviously the dessert. Cakes, traditional kuih, puddings and agars. The quality of the buffet range hints the flavours we’ll be getting from the new menu.

Highlighting the launch and anniversary celebration, Chef Umar and his crew showed us what to expect in the new menu and the glamorous spectacle includes Rack of Australian Lamb Loin with Satay Sauce (Kambing Panggang Berempah) and the Grilled chicken (Ayam Panggang Kuah Percik). Both richly infused with herbs and spices, it aims to harmoniously please the palate of all races here in Malaysia as well as tourist from all over the world.

Showing off their new dish, the Steamed Seabass with special Mango Sauce (Ikan Siakap Kukus Mangga Muda) and the Deep fried Senangin Fish simmered in Spicy Gravy (Ikan Senangin Masak Lemak Asam) at RM 65. Other fish varieties include Ikan Tongkol/Local Tuna, Ikan Patin/Catfish, Ikan Bawal/Whole Pomfret, and Ikan Jenahak/Fillet of Golden Snapper with 8 cooking methods to offer.

Not forgetting the favourite local delight, Chicken/Beef Satay served with homemade peanut sauce and an amazing addition to the dessert menu, the Ketayap Pandan with Ice Cream (Malay pancake rolled with gula Melaka served with pandan flavoured ice cream) and the daring attempt of Durian Tiramisu served with Fruit Compote. I reckon the second rather challenging for me but nevertheless am keeping me intrigue and looking forward to this dessert.

Enlivening the nights when dining at the Songket would be the in house performances which brag the glory of Malaysia’s cultural heritage. Feeding dinners with lots of classic and traditional music along with performances from brilliant dancers is what this restaurant offers along with their immense flavour from their dishes.
